Torre was not a good field manager. Not nearly as good as Showalter.

BUT...Torre was the only guy, ever, ever, ever, able to handle Steinbrenner. For that alone he deserves to be in the Hall, for that alone he is a great manager and a man of almost saintly patience.

Without Torre, this franchise dissolves into madness. Without Torre, we don't get the last dynasty.
