What will it take to install safety netting? Now we know.

The answer was always there:

It would take a little girl getting hit in the face by a 100-mph line drive and being carried from the stadium by a terrified grandfather.

It would take two teams of grown men kneeling to cry into their hands, as paramedics swabbed blood from the seats.

It would take public anger.

Or... will it take something worse?

I can't be the only one who hates the nets up the line.

I don't like them at all. But things like this shouldn't be happening. And the Yankees, unsurprisingly, have dragged their feet on this, because some box seat season ticket holders don't want to watch through a net. Money talks more loudly than a screaming kid.

Those with the power really should keep pressing the matter until something is done and not not let it blow over and forgotten about in a week. Sadly we all know that this is going to be the exact the outcome out of all this. The rich fans do not want obstructed views and money speaks a lot louder than a few hurt children a year. This is the third time this year something had happened to children there and who knows how many times to grown adults. The Yanks just don't care.

It does help that this time it was a cute white curly red haired young girl. That's basically the prototype ideal American girl. It's not some average Joe boy like the other times. The media will eat that all up if the parents were shady enough to abuse her for other's loftier goals to get netting up. I feel it's wrong to exploit children like that but realistically that's what it's going to take to get the Yanks to budge on this matter other than some serious legal action. Netting would have been up ages ago if they really cared.

Let's just hope the precipitating event doesn't happen in the next 24-48 hours at the hospital.

@Leinstery they said the same thing when the put up the nets above the plexiglass at hockey arenas and it hasn't been an issue.

@John M no matter what it says on the back of the ticket, the family of that poor toddler might be lawyering up as we speak and I couldn't blame them.

Two things to think about...

1. Balls are livelier and being hit harder because of maple bats. Add to that the players are bigger and stronger and every pitch is 92 mph or faster, it's a miracle that more fans have not been hurt from line drives.

2. What if that was a child of color instead of a white toddler?
