"In Citi Field, the Metsies Blow..."

I have to head out to Colorado for a few days, and no, it is absolutely NOT true that I am on special assignment to NORAD to make certain preparations just in case the June 12 summit goes wrong.

No, nope, absolutely nothing to that!

But since I will have to miss most of Memorial Day weekend, I will leave you with the following, inspired by looking at all the long rows of empty seats in the Stadium-formerly-known-as-Shea late night.

(With apologies to Lt. Col. John McCrae):

In Citi Field the Metsies lie,
Beneath the jet-congested sky.
Their arms have faltered one-by-one,
Their bats have failed, they cannot run
And Cespedes doth pound his thigh.

They are the Dead. Short days ago
They lived, won games, saw Mickey Calloway glow.
Loved and were loved
By Mets fans, anyway.
Then their prospects died in May.

Take heed, ye fans, and observe the fate,
Of the team whose owner craves real estate.
His dreams are not filled with rings or pennants
But wealthy European tenants.
He does not care if the seats are cold
In Citi Field, where the Metsies fold.

For now, the Yanks hang onto their lead over Soccer, 89-84.

Horace, you should give your apologies to all of us, not just the Lt. Col.

What, too soon?

I kid, I kid.

And I kid my Mets fan friends. But oy, what a sad scene out there last night! The attendance was officially 22,195, but if so about 15,000 of those must have been hiding from the rain in the centerfield apple.

And all their stupid little economies. They sign Todd Frazier instead of Moustakas and end up with Reyes at third, batting .132 and making the game-losing error.

They refuse to sign Hosmer, and end up with Adrian Gonzalez at first.

It would not have taken much to make the Mets a genuine contender again.

Now, not one, not two, but three different teams in their division have zipped past them with young talent that is likely to dominate for many years. Give Jetes two or three more seasons, and the Marlins will be past them, too.

Ridiculous!

CC fucking sucks

JM said...

CC being CC. Has had some great starts this year, but not this one.

Leinstery said...

CC is all smoke and mirrors. Once people catch on he gets lit up.

Thankfully Gleyber might be the greatest baseball player in the world. He reminds me of a young Albert Pujols.

How many more runs before it's sage to bring in Toonces?

_safe_

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Nevermind, Szell. It isn't safe.

Leinstery said...

Heck of an outing from CC. 7 runs to a team that wouldn't know offense if it bit them on the ass.

KD said...

wow Hoss. you have a gift, my man. This blog is getting ethereal.

We do not have pitching for the long haul. We are always a Tanaka elbow, CC knee, German testicle, or Gray brain away from that swirling vortex of shit known as the "one game wild card."

KD said...

you said it, 13bit. we're a fun team. a good team. an awesome team to watch. but we are not a post season team. no chance. none at all.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Zantac alert!

KD said...

when the hell will we move The Gleyber up? Batting position should be based on merit, not seniority. what is this? a fucking union shop?

Leinstery said...

I'd honestly rather Betances come in a game over Robertson. Robertson has been terrible all year. Back to back walks with men on base, great job fuckhead.

I thought they were going to win this game after going up 10-5, once CC gave up more runs it started feeling like an inevitable loss.

KD said...

ROBERTSON NOW sucks bigly. I've been a fan. no more.

KD said...

WE SUCK. WE SUCK. WE SUCK. GTOD DAMN WE SUCK.

Leinstery said...

He's a fucking asshole. But This is Boone's fault for taking out Holder (never thought I'd say that) and putting in Shreve. Shreve hasn't gotten an out since April yet let's put him in the game where a team that can't hit are torching everything.

KD said...

Coops sux. why do we have no pitching? Boone sux. awful. terrible. The WORSE!!!!

KD said...

tell me its not time to panic. go ahead and tell me!

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Toonces is up in the bullpen.

Time to turn in.

KD said...

TELL ME NOT TO PANIC OVER THIS STAFF!!! TELL ME GODDAMNIT!!!!

Leinstery said...

Well, I guess it's time to talk about recipes involving pineapples.

KD said...

Can't wait to Alfonsos take on this game tomorrow. what a cluster fuck of a staff we have. and Boone. duque needs to take the helm. what a joke. THE FUCKING RANGERS!!!!

HoraceClarke66 said...

There's no need to panic, but yes, right now this is not a championship team.

I don't think that Boston's pitching—and particularly its pen—will continue at this level. But right now, we don't have the pitching to beat any of the other, Big Three contenders in an October series.

I do agree with Leinstery and others that this is a (rare) loss to pin on Ma Boone.

The game should never, ever, EVER depend upon Chasen Shreve. Not unless it's tied in the 18th inning. Even then, I'd seriously consider bringing Didi in to pitch first.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Just as F. Scott Fitzgerald said that he and Zelda went broke the usual way, slowly at first then all at once, this game got away from us slowly at first, then all at once.

—CC being clocked for five runs in one inning should be the end of his night. Why the devil do we have eight, count 'em eight, relief pitchers, if not for nights like this. Bringing him back out was idiotic.

—Jonathan Holder did the job and closed the door. Why is his night over? Why does the old, fat, over the hill guy get another inning on a hot night in Texas, but the young guy gets whisked off after 2/3 of an inning?

—At just 10-7, we can't let the game ride on Shreve. We have to lead with Robertson or Toonces, or bring in Green, despite last night. It cannot come down to Shreve.

KILLER GAME.

THIS GAME HAD A STENCH TO IT THE ENTIRE WAY.

ENDED UP A PINEAPPLE.

WHY DID SHREVE HAVE TO COME IN AGAIN TONIGHT? HE PITCHED YESTERDAY.

DELLIN IS GETTING HOT, USE HIM NOT SHREVE AGAIN!

DAMMIT!....OFF NIGHT TOMORROW, SHIT.

10 FUCKING RUNS DOESN'T WIN IT.

M'FER...M'FER.

(BTW... I LOVED YOUR MET POEM HOSS...I REALLY DID).

HoraceClarke66 said...

Thanks, ALL-CAPS! And it turned out to be more appropriate than ever, as the Mets dropped a series to the Fish.

But...that Yankees loss takes some of the joy out of the taunting, and leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

It's not just a random pineapple. It's a flashing oil light telling of big trouble up ahead...

TheWinWarblist said...

That was despicable.

Alibi Ike said...

HC, I'm going to pinch this today for Bardball.com, if you have no objection. You're stuff is terrific.

Alibi Ike said...

Actually, I'm gonna put it up Tuesday or Wednesday. Might be considered bad taste to post it on Memorial Day weekend.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Sorry to take so long getting back to you, Alibi Ike, but I've been out of town. But yes, by all means, pinch away!

Thanks, man!
