The Yankees are sifting through Triple A for a Roy Hobbs: Next up, Billy McKinney

It's been a while since Billy McKinney plucked our heartstrings of hope. To be precise, 2016.

That year, he appeared as an extra particle in the mammoth Aroldis-for-Gleyber deal with the Cubs. He'd been a first-round pick for Oakland and future Hall of Famer (a la Clint Frazier) whose rise had been delayed by injuries.

The following season, in Trenton and Scranton, McKinney hit .277 with 16 HRs. Then he hit the Yankees' perpetual logjam of contractual mediocrity, which persists to this day. With a forever-opened tap of salary-dump veterans, the Yankees simply don't give youngsters much of a chance. It was that way in 2017. It's that way now. Long-term MLB tryouts are for small markets.

In 2018, McKinney was shipped to Toronto (along with Brandon Drury, who has since rebuilt his career) for J.A. Happ, a deal that kept intact Brian Cashman's string of pitching disappointments. McKinney bounced from Toronto to Milwaukee to the Dodgers to Texas and back to Oakland, before re-signing last year with the Yankees and returning to Scranton, where, by now, he can presumably run for city council.

This season, he started slowly, then heated up, as the Yankee mother ship  started going through outfielders like supermodels doing Ozempic. He's hitting .274 with nine HRs. He's a lefty hitter, a commodity the Death Barge desperately needs, and he's contractually expendable. They can toss him into the fire and see what happens.

This season, they have done the same with Franchy Cordero (hitting .148), Jake Bauers (.227) and Willie Calhoun (.234). Each showed pop... for a while, then settled back into previous grooves. The Yankees seek another Matt Carpenter, who last year rose from from the recycling bin to hit .305 with 15 HRs, but who then looked overmatched in the post-season and who this year is hitting .183 for San Diego. (The Yankees recently released 35-year-old Kole Calhoun from Scranton, after he hit .281 in 23 games.)

Basically, they're scouring the dental clinic dumpster for gold fillings.

Sadly, one guy who won't get a call is Estevan Florial, the speedy, 25-year-old CF who is hitting .317 with 12 HRs and 11 SBs at Scranton. They have no more options on Florial, so if they bring him up, they can't send him down. Thus, he's trapped in limbo, at least until the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

It's always something, right? There's always a reason why the kid isn't ready. (Unless, of course, he comes with massive hype, like Aaron Judge or Anthony Volpe, and that comes with its own set of strings, eh?) And it usually comes down to upper management maintaining leverage.

So... here comes McKinney, who will likely spell Anthony Rizzo at 1B in today's double-header. If he hits a HR or two, he could get another chance against Boston. And then, who knows? Maybe the guy somehow uncovered the secret of hitting - maybe he finally figured out the curve ball that was eluding him - and maybe after all this time, he's Roy Hobbs from the 1984 movie "The Natural."

Well, that's the hope, eh? Okay, juju gods, he's all yours...

There's a better chance of catching a glimpse of grandma crossing her legs in a miniskirt than little Billy being nothing more than a scrap heap addition. He'll likely be gone in a week or two.

That leaves Giancarlo as our hero-in-waiting? He's beginning to make Ellsbury look like Charlie Hustle.

Since grandma was buried six decades ago, that *would* be scary.

Florial should sue the Yankees and MLB. He could be the Curt Flood of his generation. What's he got to lose?

Why not bring back Ellsbury? isn't he still under contract?

The air quality yesterday got worse as the day went on, and today doesn't look like it's going to be any better. I'll be surprised if they play both games today, or it they play at all.

Judging by my record of predictions, that should mean we'll have two games in the books by bedtime.

No JM - that means they’ll be playing four games today

It also means that all three of our GMs will be standing equal distantly apart at the top of the stadium’s upper deck holding oscillating fans.

Lettuce hope that the fans are turned on and that our three super intellects know which way to aim their blowers….

Next no hit Genius Cashman acquisition.

It would be the perfect opportunity for The Three Amigos to use the oscillating fans to blow some of that Canadian smoke up our asses.

Loved the city council line, Duque.

Here's the full craziness of the situation: they're not afraid that Florial will fail. They're afraid that FLORIAL WILL DO WELL.

What happened when they decided they were through with Estevan earlier this year? They ran him through waivers. Nobody claimed him, so he re-signed with Scranton.

What will happen if he comes up to the Yankees and flops? Same thing.

Their real fear is that Florial will hit and run like blazes, and then what??? Brian Cashman's Jenna-style 40-man roster will be upset.

Oh, the humanity!

McKinney got his extended trial in 2019 and 2021 (he sat out the Covid year, or got hurt again, it's unclear). He had 276 PA with Toronto in 2019, and hit .215.

He had 300 PA with 3 teams—including the Mets—in 2021, and hit a combined .193.

Last year, he got 57 PA with Oakland...and hit .096.

At this rate, he should hit in negative percentages for the Yanks.

Stop worrying, everyone. We've called up Matt Krook.

Everything is fine.

Anyone wondering about the current state of the Yankees need only look at the starting OF for Game One today: Bauers, McKinney, & Calhoun.

‘nuff said.

AQI was twice as high yesterday.

And, as predicted, my prediction for the games today was wrong. They're playing both.

Ventilators and Iron Lungs will be available in both clubhouses as well as fresh oxygen sources - so everything should be peachy.

So . . . let's play four!

Are they playing today? Seems to me they should postpone until Saturday. It can't be good to be huffing and puffing running around when the air quality is the worst in the world. Equivalent to smoking a pack or two of cigarettes.

So if they don't play today hmmmm.... what movie to watch tonight? I'm torn between "The Siege of Firebase Gloria"/"Avenging Force"/"The Driver" (with Ryan O'Neal, 1978). The latter has a very hot French chick.

The Hammer of God said...

Oh, so they're playing today. Scratch the movies, then. Looks like we're in for Yankee no hit torture, a double dose of it today!

25 y/o Florial. 25 is old for a prospect. If they're never going to bring him up, then trade the guy for a low level pitching prospect. And if they can't trade him, then release him and bring in another teenage prospect. Can't they find and bring in another one from somewhere? I don't get the way they operate here. This is why they only develop one player per decade.

The way they run their minor leagues is a disgrace. No wonder they can't compete with Tampa or the ASS-stros. Those teams continually develop and bring in new prospects, who are soon contributing to their major league club. We bring up Billy McKinney, who has already been up here before and is nothing more than a fringe major leaguer, a bench player at best. And he's not even the best bench player they could bring up. What a joke!

Isabelle Adjani (The Tenant, Possession) is in The Driver.

I'd advise you to watch it anyway, HamogoD.

Then give Possession and The Tenant a viewing.

After that perhaps you can watch Bambi

What's the bitching about playing ball in a little haze.
My Mom smoked a pack a day for 33 years and these guys are young fit athletes.
Stop codling them!!!!!!

[Full disclosure, my Mom routinely coughed every time she laughed and died of a heart attack at 53 ]

Sorry to hear that, Archie!

Just reading something that I THINK said the regular, day-to-day number for particulate matter in square millimeter of air in New York in the 1930s—when it was a much more industrial town—was 227. When a dust storm from out west rolled through in 1934, it got up to 619.

Nowadays, it is usually below 12, and has been for decades. Yesterday, it was over 800. Oy.

BTR999 said...

No pun intended Hammer, but you hit the nail on the head.

The Yankees minor league organization, all of it, is a disgrace.

DickAllen said...

Every time there's a fire in SoCal, there's a layer of dust covering everything.

Best to let it settle outside than in anyone's lungs.

I don't give a rat's ass about the players - the fans have to sit outside with no respite. But who in MLB cares about the fans?
