According to The Athletic, the sports page for today's Gray Lady, the aftermath of the upcoming midterm elections - along with riots, floods and funny presidential burp vocalizations - will feature an MLB "free agent frenzy," as owners lock down rosters before the lockdown.
If so, we could soon get a glimpse of Food Stamps Hal Steinbrenner's new, ultra-fortified money pile, following the $2.6 billion infusion from Apollo Sports Capital. That's cash on the barrelhead, people. Mad money. With the Dodgers facing fraud investigations, and the Mets and Phillies still licking their wounds, the Yankees could - for a month, anyway - bestride the sports world as the swinging dick of dollars.
Remember: It was the winter of 2009 when Hal shelled out for Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett - a $200 million spending spree - leading to our last championship.
Dare we dream?
Nah. There's a reason we call him "Food Stamps."
Still, with all that money... all that cash... here's what we could buy:
1. Tarik Skubal. Nothing complicated. He's the best player available. Get him. Don't buy into the bullshit that we already have enough pitching. We don't. He's our Sabathia.
2. Michael King. Plan B, if Skubal signs elsewhere. And even if Skubal signs with us, King would be our AJ Burnett.
3. Sonny Gray. This won't happen. There is no universe where the Yankees would make up with this guy. But money is a healing balm, and signing this guy would kick Boston in the teeth, which is always pleasurable.
4. Brandon Lowe. Two-time All-Star 2B, which would keep us from having to depend on You Know Who. (Guy hit 35 HRs this year for Pittsburgh; he'll be 32.)
5. Teruaki Sato, third baseman from Japan. Our Hideki Matsui? Isn't it time for an Asian star?
Either way, let's get to the bidding. These well-played world series games - with hustling, and defensive gems and timely hitting - God, they'll bore us to death. Onward to the post-midterm riots, everybody! Those flat screen TVs aren't going to loot themselves!

We either change the name officially to El Duque's glorious "Death Barge," which has a snappy ring to it, or "The New York Titanics," but we need to retire and archive "The Yankees" because it bears no relation to it's history and associations. I have followed these guys for 60+ years now, defended them through thick and thin, through mediocre cycles and greatness. I have never wavered, as AA might point out. The one thing I never thought I'd see on my dance card, though, was "Who cares?" I'm still a fan, but they have lost me. I'll still be here, but mainly as a way to process the loss. And the worst part? They don't care.

The future’s so bright
We’re all gunna need . . .
Fallout Shelters
They've become as dysfunctional as the Jets, so that works.
They would also need to change the name of the stadium to "Rat Feces Park and shopping mall"
Why would anyone think Hal would pour more than a little back into the team, when he can pocket the profits and share with his buddies.
+1!
Free agents won't save the Yankees. Skubal & Sato? Yeah, I suppose it would help, but it won't make them champs. They need a humungous overhaul of the entire organization. Need to get real baseball guys in here, especially at GM. Until that happens, the clown show will continue.
Duque, you want Sunny Gray back? You're kidding, right?
Yesterday, I saw some crazy schmuck on the internet wrote an article, (I didn't even read it), but I think he wanted Gary Sanchez back. What's that guy been smokin', eh? Perhaps not smokin, maybe drippin' acid.
Nuthin' lasts forever. I guess this is the way the New York Yankees are going to die. They won't die, die. But they'll just fade away into obscurity....
Perhaps be a trivia answer on the show Jeopardy, if that's still around 150 years from now. "This major league baseball franchise won its 27th Championship in 2009 to lead baseball, then never won again. Eventually, it was overtaken by the Dodgers, Red Sox, Rays, Astros, Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Brewers. Who are the New York Yankees?"
Brew Crew won Game 1 last nite. Even though the umps and the challenge reviewers in New York tried with might and main to help the Rays. The gambling establishment must've wanted the Rays to win.
BTW, did ya'll catch the pitcher swap Kevin Cash orchestrated? Rasmussen was supposed to start, but Martinez comes out to pitch. Ha Ha! More head games by that asshole Cash. Just like the Red Sox would've done. Anyway, it backfired. Martinez gave up 2 runs in the 1st. And you knew the Brewers were going to win that game!
A fucking World Series game on hold in the 9th inning for a review of a game ending double play that, of course, turned out to be NOT game ending. I think that call has to be upheld. Not enough evidence to overturn the call on the field. Brewers closer Tyler McGill has to get a lot of credit for striking out the next guy to end the game. For the 15 minute roller coaster ride that was the last out of the game, to master his emotions and concentrate on getting the job done. He got four outs in the inning, and he got the last out TWICE!!! Hey, the Brew Crew got to celebrate twice! Two for one! Somethin' for nothin'!
Gotta disagree with you, Hammer. He looked like he clearly missed the bag on the replay. I think if you're gonna have replays, you can't ignore them.
And Milwaukee still won.
I would definitely sign Sato. I would try to sign Skubal, too, but Cohen might make the price prohibitive, in which case I would pick up King. And...look for a bench out there somewhere!
But I know, I know: Hal isn't leading the lockout mob to pay MORE money.
There was one replay that seemed to show his foot off the bag when he caught the ball. But there was another replay, a better angle, that showed his foot coming off the bag and then, as his foot moved across the bag, the spikes on the bottom of his foot may have scraped the top of the bag, and he had the ball at that time. So I thought there was enough for the call to "stand", as the video was not conclusive. If they can't decide after seeing a few replays in 20 seconds, the call on the field should stand.
