Tampa or the Brewers? Which team should receive the Yankiverse's prized juju?

Here is comes: Fox Sports' worst nightmare - a Rays/Brewers world series that will draw Dr. Pimple Popper ratings, as MLB's owners prepare to self-immolate.

Last night, you felt it: Cleveland looks to be sliding into Lake Erie, the cheesiest great lake, which hasn't even been renamed by the Mango. As the game ended, their lone star, Jose Ramirez, sat in the dugout looking pissed and mystified - pisstified? It's all over but the whining. Tampa in six.

So, the Rays v the Brewers? What a concept: The two best teams in baseball, the two ascendant rosters full of youth and promise, crashing headlong into each other.

To which franchise should Yank fans bestow our priceless juju?

The arguments...

FOR THE BREWERS:

1. Neither Jake Bauers and/or Gary Sanchez - ex-Yanks - invoke any grand sense of infidelity. Bauers had no place with the Yankees; it's nice to see that he made something of himself. Same with Gary; a lot of water under the bridge, but no hard feelings. They can't all be Jorge Posada.

2. Milwaukee has never hurt us. You gotta go back to 1957 to find a bloodletting worthy of vengeance. Eddie Mathews is long gone. That's too long ago, even for me. Yeah, Paul Molitor and Prince Fielder crushed us for a few years, but the Yankees were so bad, it really didn't matter.

3. Gotta love that cleavage lady fan who sits behind home plate and scores each game in a scrapbook. I thought she had to be a marketing ploy. Apparently, she's for real. Been doing it for years.

4. Tampa loathes us. Might as well loathe them back.

FOR THE RAYS

1. If they win, they will realize the emptiness of sports success. It will get it out of their system, and they'll be bad for five years.

2. On the eve of the owners' lockout, baseball's cheapest team wins the ring? Not exactly the cleanest prevailing argument for a salary cap.

3. Drew Rasmussen = future Yankee. (Or, more likely, a Dodger.) Either way, he's gone.

4. The traditional "root for your division" viewpoint, as championed by America's Mayor, back in 2024? Remember how Topps inserted Rudy into the Redsock celebration?

Not sure it brings bragging rights, but if Tampa runs the table, the Yankees don't look so putrid by being whupped.

FOR THE ASTEROID:

1. Who cares, really? Isn't this why they created Monday Night Football?

I'm with Winnie here. First off, Brewers shat all over L.A. That gets my loyalty - at least, the loyalty that can be bought - for at least the next three weeks.

Second, Tampa Bay has gotten into my bones and not in a good way. I appreciate our fearless leader's cogent arguments in favor - and yes, getting whupped by the WS winner makes us look better, but do we really care at this point.

Let's look at that - as we properly should - as a Manichaean battle between good and evil, right and wrong, sweet and sour, yin and yang. FUCK THE FLORIDA TEAM THAT PISSES IN OUR TOILETS. Fuck they who humiliate us all the time, despite showing the intelligence of their coaches, manager and front office. Fuck the sellouts who sell off every time they hit their sell-by date.

I'm rooting for Milwaukee this time around.

The Brewers have fans who show up. The Brewers have not humiliated us since we were babes, toddlers, and gleams in our fathers' eyes. The Brewers are named for guys who make beer.

If Tennessee ever gets a MLB team, it should be named the Distillers. Or let's cut to the chase, forget about naming the stadium, stop being somewhat euphemistic, and just call every player on the team Jack Daniels. Or maybe the team name should be the Overholts.

Brewers in five.

Brewers, please.

We must support local and independent brewers and breweries of all shapes and sizes.

MILWAUKEE HAS NEVER HURT US???

I, for one, am not over that 1957 World Series, even if it happened a month or two before I was conceived.

First, it featured the Nippy Jones incident. The Yanks had made a great comeback against Warren Spahn, and were leading in the 10th inning in Milwaukee, when the Braves claimed that Yanks' hurler Tommy Byrne hit little-used pinch-hitter Nippy Jones in the foot with a pitch that bounced into the Braves' dugout.

Milwaukee, of course, managed to produce a ball smeared with shoeshine. Augie Donatelli, umpiring at home, fell for the ploy and put Nippy on base, from whence he would score the tying run in the Braves' unlikely rally to win the game....

Much worse than that, Milwaukee infielder Red Schoendienst deliberately dropped on The Mick's shoulder at second base to prevent him from advancing on an errant pickoff throw.

Mantle—at only 25—had just had maybe his greatest season ever, hitting .365, with an amazing .512 OBP. That's right: he reached base more than half the times he was up.

He was off to a blazing start in the 1957 World Series, hitting over .400, when Schoendienst jumped on his shoulder—something that The Mick said felt like "a bag of concrete" had been dropped on him" (And he should know, as "The Bag of Concrete Drop" was a regular event at Commerce town fairs.)

Mickey missed two games in the Series, had only one more hit—a single—and said that it affected his left-handed swing for the last 11 years of his career.

So I say NO, Milwaukee HAS hurt us, and hurt us bad, and I'm rooting for the Domers. Or The Contrarian's Guardians of Traffic, who aren't quite dead yet.

BTR999, where else might one express themselves honestly if not here?

I will say that it's fun watching baseball played by real baseball players the way baseball is supposed to be played. That is the worst evil that HAL and CashBrain et al. have perpetrated: Destroying the professionalism of this once great franchise.

Oh, and Warbler? Bud Selig is NOT dead. That's right: the resilient little bastard is 92. Another reason why the Brewers should only lose!

Maybe midway through this season, I said the Brewers are going to win the World Series this year, and they've been my favorite team this year. So Brewers it is!!!

The Hammer of God said...

A Brewers vs Rays World Series would be the two best teams at hitting balls through holes, making contact, and scoring runs in every possible way.

When the Red Sox were going well this year, I really thought they'd knock off the Rays and make it to the World Series. That was my only miss this year. I've nailed all my other predictions, so far.

The Hammer of God said...

I think Cleveland might be able to force a Game 7. And if they do, then anything is possible. I thought the Rays would be too much for the Guardians, but I'd like it if I'm wrong. A Brewers vs Guardians World Series would be even better. I wouldn't have to watch the hateful Rays in the finals.

But I really don't care that much. Whoever wins, I've already had multiple psychic orgasms from seeing the Brewers destroy the fucking Dodgers. That was truly awesome. Thank you, Milwaukee Brewers! You've made my baseball year! Whatever happens, I'll never forget this year. It won't be one of those "they're all starting to run together now" kind of year. This one will be one for the ages.
