Beginning Labor Day, Scylla and Charybdis await us, and how did we get here?

Behold, the whirlpools of September...

Six games, four commencing after bedtime, against teams on the upswing, suddenly vaulted into a Wild Card race they hadn't planned in April. One of those dreaded West Coast trips, the kind that historically undresses an overrated and ill-fated Yankee team... perhaps like this one.

Scylla and Charybdis. Death and Taxes. Brad and Angelina. Oakland and Seattle.

Until two weeks ago, the narrative of 2018 portrayed the Yankees and Redsocks scrapping through one of those great traditional rivalries, hearkening back to the turn of the century. Then Boston crushed us, an embarrassment and a humiliation, which stems from their ownership's willingness to spend money. I don't begrudge Boston's advantage. It's not as if John Henry has more money than the Steinbrenners. He simply wants to win.

For the last 10 years, ever since Food Stamps Hal took the reins, the Yankees and their YES propaganda machine have carped relentlessly about luxury taxes. Slowly, their whines prevailed upon an increasingly vulnerable, financially distressed NYC sports media. Somehow, we all came to believe that if the Yankees didn't lower their payroll, the billionaire Steinbrenners could not afford to continue. This, of course, is ludicrous.

The Redsocks ($233 million opening day payroll) continued to spend, luxury taxes be damned. The Yankees scream about wasted money on Jacoby Ellsbury (though nobody forced them to give him such a ridiculous contract), yet his deal  pales compared to Boston's washouts for Rusney Castillo, Pablo Sandoval, Hanley Ramirez and Dustin Pedroia. (I'd add David Price at $30 million through 2022.) Yet at the deadline, they grabbed Steve Pearce and Ian Kinsler. It's only money.

Yankee fans are supposed to take solace in the fact that our payroll has been cut, so we can spend more freely next winter? Huh. So... what exactly is the plan?

We'll sign Manny Machado and Bryce Harper, each to massive 10-year-deals, the kind that are guaranteed to backfire within five seasons, so Cheapo Hal can blame the players and revert back into Austerity Mode?

Comrades, we are staggering into the darkest road trip of 2018, and our rightfielder could be Shane Robinson. The Yankees won't even add a decent replacement for fear of tripping luxury taxes that couldn't affect Hal Steinbrenner's lifestyle if they ran a thousand years.

We haven't won a fucking thing since 2009, yet the Yankees give themselves plaques in centerfield, and the media touts our front office for Cooperstown.

Death and Despair await us. Beware the trials of September. Maybe it's a mercy killing that we won't get to watch.

Put On a Happy Face
Tony Bennett

Gray skies are gonna clear up
Put on a happy face
Brush off the clouds and cheer up
Put on a happy face

Take of the gloomy mask of tragedy
It's not your style
You'll look so good that you'll be glad
You decided to smile

Pick out a pleasant outlook
Stick out that noble chin
Wipe off that full-of-doubt look
Slap on a happy grin

And spread sunshine all over the place
And put on a happy face

Gray skies are gonna clear up
Put on a happy face
Brush off the clouds and cheer up
Put on a happy face

And if you're feeling cross and bitterish
Don't sit and whine
Think of banana splits and licorice
And…

Stanton's 32nd HR of the year resulted in some sort of old song being sung by John S. I wish these guys would play like this every day...I'm sure Sterling does also.

Zach Britton still has a chance to lose this game.

I haven’t been on this blog or listen to the Yankees much since the bottom of the ninth in the fourth Yankees Sox game... but I just couldn’t help but notice was an ugly ugly ugly kid George Steinbrenner IV is. Pictures at AutoWeek:

It ain't easy, Carl.

Walker proved why it's dangerous to just throw a guy into the outfield. It doesn't hurt most times, and then it really does.

Kahnle looked awful. Wow. He just screwed the rest of the pen.

Severino was getting praise from the announcer staff for a good outing. The Jay's didn't score, but throwing 95 pitches in five innings is not a good outing. He needs rest, or at least a better pitching coach.

This team is a mess. "And Bird can't handle the throw." Jesus.

We won and we won by a fair margin. Why is it all so unsatisfying?

El Duque, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Marxists who control MLB tack on another, purely baseball penalty for being above the payroll limit too many years in a row? A loss of draft picks, or some such?

Just wondering.

All I can think of these days watching these games is that if Brandon Drury hadn't developed migraine headaches, Andujar would still be languishing in coal country.

Billy Beane, with no resources, wins about as many games as Cashman, with almost unlimited resources. All you need to know about Cashman.

Beau George the IV looks way too much like a metrosexual dweeb.

Sehr geehrte Herr Carl Weitz! Just a quick correction: thanks for the optimism, but “Put on a Happy Face” is a song from the 1960 Broadway musical “Bye Bye Birdie” written by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams. Dick Van Dyke sings it in the 1963 film version and it soon became an “evergreen.” Tony Bennett ain’t got nuthin’ to do with it (although I’m sure he covered it, as did hundreds of others singers and jazzmen).

More important: how the hell did we win today? The faces looked as dazed and confused as usual, so I'll wager that happiness had nothing to do with it.
