Waiting for Cole

CASHMAN: Still no word.

HAL: (despairingly). You're sure he likes us?

CASHMAN: He seemed to like us.

HAL: But you do not know he likes us?

CASHMAN: He said he likes us.

HAL: But he has not called or texted.

CASHMAN: He wanted to wait. (They stare at the tree.) What should we do?

HAL: We can trade Andujar.

CASHMAN: (Sighs) I do not wish to trade Andujar.
HAL: He would fetch something of value.

CASHMAN: I do not wish to trade Andujar.

HAL: It would save money.

CASHMAN: True. (Responding to a sound.) What's that? Did you hear that?

HAL: I heard nothing.

CASHMAN: It sounded like a cell phone.

HAL: I heard nothing.

CASHMAN: (Takes out cell phone, studies it, shakes it, puts it back.) Perhaps he will call or text tomorrow.

HAL: Or the day after tomorrow.

CASHMAN: He should call.

HAL: So... we wait?

CASHMAN: Are we not born mad? Doomed to live meaningless lives on moonlit fields, waiting for stars that never descend, for answers that never come?

(They wait for 60 seconds, symbolizing the passage of a minute.)

HAL: You know, a lot of teams want Andujar...

El Duque,

You have taken your place among the great Spanish named baseball themed modernist writers of all time. Ramón María del Valle-Inclán y de la “Tony” Peña and Antonio “Manny” Machado and could not have done better.

Waiting is the hardest part. Especially when you know that what you're actually waiting for is nothing more than disappointment.

This is the existential pain of Yankee fans for ten years now. Everything ends with the same anguish, whether it's action not taken or action taken by the bumblers in management.

Larry Rothschild is the new pitching coach of the Royals. Watch. Next year, all of their starters will win 20, and they'll nail the division even though the team batting average is .220.

Just very slightly behind the season BA for Sanchez.

Doug--I meant the Padres. My fingers insisted on Royals.
