Protecting Mediocrity

Last night we saw how the Orioles went from a regular cellar dweller to a championship contender.  The broadcasters even showed us charts.

They suffered the consequences of poor talent ( came in last )  and earned top picks in the draft.  They made no idiotic trades which caused MLB to penalize them, by moving them ( say ) 10  spots down in the draft ( see Yankees ).

And when they drafted, they drafted well. Young Baltimore players  come up and perform like major leaguers.  Not guys  ( see Yankees ) who struggle to hit .200, don't field well, and have not been taught how to run the bases, bunt or work a pitcher.

Baltimore dealt the one or two decent veterans they had ( eg Trey Mancini ) well before their expiration. dates. and secured young, highly rated prospects.

On the other side of this coin sits Brian Cashman. Whose trade gaffes are legendary.  But whose major crime is not drafting well and failing miserably at developing talent. Our farm system has been  ( except for Judge ) awful for decades,  and Cashman is not held responsible.  But he is responsible. He is the General Manager, in charge of everything.

Look at the yankee line-up.  In ten years ( more, actually );

1.  The Yankees have not developed a quality catcher.

2.  We have not developed a first baseman or a third baseman.

3.  Did I forget second base?  Nope.  No one there either.

4.  If you are happy with a .200 hitting, average fielding SS, Brian drafted and developed that position.

5.  We have failed to develop a left fielder, and had to trade one of our best young ( lefty ) pitchers for a .250 hitting centerfielder.

6.  As to pitching;  We traded for our Ace; we traded for our closer  ( Holmes, Kanele, Wandy ? ).  Cashman's big move was to sign and develop Luis Severino. Need I say more?

We are drowning with multi million dollar contracts, paying for players who can't help. Cashman has used a failed strategy for years ( trade for burned out guys with huge contracts), and all it does is assure continuing mediocrity.

The Yankees make the "play-in " game and win sometimes.  Maybe they even get to the next level. But not close to the World Series. And, because we got as far as we did, our draft position is low to horrible. So we acquire no obvious talent, and have to take high risks on our picks, trying to compensate for the low drafting slot.  Those risks always seem to go up in flames.

We are about to ring the bell again.  Another round of the same old crap.

We all know;  the Yankees will never win another World Series with Cashman and Boone running things.

I believe by the end of this date, 7/31/23, the Yankees will

a. Have NOT traded for anything worthwhile.

b. Will NOT have dumped the acres and acres of deadwood on the roster.

c. Will have gotten off to a 7-game week in which it is possible they will go 1-and-6.

Boy, I would like to be wrong about (a) and (b). I don't think (c) matters -- do you?

--

In other words, this crap will NOT have improved. It will NOT look better. It will seem to be certifiable, undeniable Suckitude.

....therefore, I think the balance of 2023 needs to be spent here on IIH demonstrating to Hal Steinbrenner that he can drive the valuation of the team from a paltry $7 billion (which he apparently spits on) to a stellar $10 billion in only 2 or 3 years. By improving the product!

1. If we can do that together here, we can then collectively hire someone to kidnap Hal and read our concepts to him. About a dozen times (the reading, that is).

2. If we can NOT do that, then we need to hire someone to kidnap Hal and read our demonstration of how NOTHING will work to Hal (about 2 dozen times). That should convince him to sell the team.

It's a win-win. Kinda-sorta.

German scratched.....

Cashman developed Jordan Montgomery, gotta give him that.

Armpit discomfort

Its ok to laugh

HoraceClarke66 said...

Yep, there has been the occasional guy developed, Publius. But then, no explanation when they suddenly fall backward.

Monty inadvertently provided one on his own, when he mentioned in an early interview that he had been sent to the Yankees' "gas station," and immediately put 10 mph on his pitches.

Shortly thereafter, Monty was on the DL, and essentially missed 3 years as an effective pitcher, making a total of 18 starts in that time. Despite some promising moments, Sevvy was not able to battle back from what were no doubt similar improvements...

Publius said...

The irony of course is that Monty, a reasonably successful drafted and developed Yankee, was traded away for a glove first, oft injured outfielder. Cash cannot do anything right. The greatest testament to Judge's magnificence is that he has thrived while playing for Brian Cashman's Yankees. It's a fucking miracle they didn't ruin him.

German Scratched Armpit discomfort. So… he’s good to go?

BTR999 said...

Well played Beauregard!

BTR999 said...

….and just like that

HoraceClarke66 said...

Wow. Already down 2-0.

Hinkey Haines said...

And … we’re done.

TheWinWarblist said...

We are only one short losing streak away from a losing record. The next 7 games could be it. We couldn't beat the Orioles, and the Rays are a better team. Our record could drop below .500 by this time next week.

The horror. The horror.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Rizzo with 6 strikeouts now in his last 7 at-bats. Amazing.

Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside said...

I dunno Win… this game doesn’t seem out of hand yet, does it? It felt good until Rizzo stole Volpe’s steal but other than that… this is Ok. I’m not bullish… but maybe calfish? Vealish? Wavering. But not hating.

While writing this, another Rays HR.

Sheepish?

HoraceClarke66 said...

Even more amazing: German now warming up in the Yankees' bullpen. The Yankees' announcers are openly befuddled.

Doug K. said...

Schmuckish?

HoraceClarke66 said...

German is now in the game.

Uhhhh...

Platoni said...

The same German who was too hurt to start is now pitching in relief? This fucking clownshow of a team, man.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Wait a minute. A large pair of rams horns have now appeared on German's head, and he seems to have developed the body of a beast. Meanwhile, horsemen armed with scythes have been reported in the area near the Stadium...

HoraceClarke66 said...

Meanwhile, Boone is telling Meredith that he would prefer it if his team went a different way from worshipping Satan and all his works, but that he does admire their commitment to something.

TheWinWarblist said...

5 runs? That's it right? The Yankees don't score more than 5 runs, do they?

The horror. The horror.

Publius said...

Either a trade fell through or Yankees management humiliated itself, yet again, trying to "outsmart" the Rays. Either way, Cashtastic.

I've long been fond of saying Brian Cashman is a 115 IQ guy in a 135 IQ industry. I think Cash's number must go down a few notches.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Meanwhile, Jon He-man in the Post has already started the "Blame it on the fans" chorus:

"I don’t mean to put any more pressure on Cashman than he already must feel. He gets killed on social media (way worse than me even), and that’s by people who profess to be big Yankee fans. I guess we shouldn’t be surprised, since many of those same Yankees fans booed Joey Gallo, Aaron Hicks and others out of town, doing them an inadvertent favor with their Bronx cheers."

I've never read anything more slavish on the sports pages.

Doug K. said...

So German is pretty much light out?

Doug K. said...

Hoss - Or we could be uh, right. Hicks is on the IL and Gallo be Gallowing

TheWinWarblist said...

No one with a lick of common sense will give Judge anything to hit for the rest of the season.

Unlike Boone, who insists on pitching to the best hitters in the game. Because Boone is a moron. A simp. A loser.

The horror. The horror.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Yes. And Gallo has stunk. But why should Jon Heyman know this? He only does it for a living.

Publius said...

Judge walk, Rizzo actually hits one...1st and 3rd, 1 out. Stanton up.

You know the rest.

HoraceClarke66 said...

And Rizzo, after 2 months without a homer, is so sure of himself that he stands at home to admire his single off the wall.

What is wrong with these guys?

Publius said...

More I think about it, the more it seems active sabotage cannot be ruled out.

Sitting Judge. Not yanking Sevy. Not starting German.

An organization that did not want to win, but could not explicitly appear to such a course, would take actions like these at this point in the season.

Cash and his nerds may have decided to "soft" tank.

Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside said...

Suzyn said F’ing!

She was quoting someone. Don’t f’ing pitch to him. Applies to Judge sadly.

Publius, "Never underestimate the role of stupidity in human affairs."

Publius said...

Ya gotta believe, Hoss...

DickAllen said...

Remember the good old days when the Yankees would go 1-8 with runners in scoring position?

Now they can’t even get to second base.

AboveAverage said...

I heard that Cashman got to second base with Hal

Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside said...

The weather here in New Hampshire is going to be magnificent all week. Highs in low 70’s. Not amount of the Yankees losing is going to fuck up my garage time. I’ll look for small pleasures… a cowardly walk of Judge… a Volpe steal (if he ever gets on base), a bad trade avoided… armpit issues… whatever it takes. Thank god I’m a Yankee, and thank god they’re still the Mets.

BTR999 said...

Word on the street is that Severino put Cayenne pepper in German’s deodorant

Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside said...

It was Severino pitching a pepper game to the O’s yesterday that got me in the pits.

Remember the ‘no pepper games” sign on the outfield wall? At the New Yankee Stadium I guess if it’s not sponsored, it’s gone.

JM said...

Good Lord, these guys suck.

BTR999 said...

Bumblin’ booney did it again, screwing up the SP assignment German already had 2 good starts against TB, but Boone didn’t seem to know or care. I’ve said for years, even if the Yanks put a great team out there, there’s always the walking roadblock to victory, Alfred E. Boone.

Oh, and cushman? Don’t bother running up the phone bill tomorrow. There’s nothing you can do to make this a playoff team. But hey, if you want to sell and stock up the minors go right ahead.

30 k’s in 2 games, 7 by Frizzo alone. The 30 K’s ties the franchise record set during the Ulysses S Grant administrion.

And if that’s not enough good news, the Angels have leapfrogged over us in the WC race.

Sweeeeet Dreeems!

Should I bring a registered therapist with me to NY for the Event? This is something that I can do if we believe that we’ll benefit from a seasoned healer of all things mental. They of course won’t have a ticket to the game but they can advise and provide healthy input and strategies towards coping positively during these troubling times during the pregame get together.

Just let me know.

Oasisdave said...

Lol, just read the Yanks are open for offers on impending free agents!!! Only Cashole would be stupid enough to trade for any of the garbage he is offering.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Beauregard, those signs are needed more than ever. I'm sure if a current Yankee even considered playing pepper, he would instantly put himself on the DL.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Oasisdave, I am sure that Cashman will move nobody—and after tomorrow, he will explain how the offers just weren't good enough. Then: he started negotiating with Harrison's agent for a big, six-year contract.

Jon Heyman will blame us for "booing Bader out of town" after he plays 30 games in 2 years.

HoraceClarke66 said...

AA, that is a very nice offer. But I for one intend to engage in a self-actualizing process known as "beer therapy." This has always worked in the past, and if necessary, I can upgrade to "Bourbon therapy" or "tequila therapy."

But thanks for asking!
