"The Alex Verdugo sweepstakes?"

I guess that sums it up.

Yet another lesson why one should never, ever say, "I guess it can't get any worse than this."

A future Hall of Famer or a career sub-200 hitter bought on the cheap? For Hal Steinbrenner, that's a no-brainer! Brian is already head-first into the dumpster and reaching for Alex Verdugo!

Next up will be spin doctor Boone telling us what a difference-maker Verdugo is. (cue the sound of a beer bottle crashing through the TV screen)

Sigh.

They’ll probably sign him for 5 million and throw on a luxury box for his family

Max Fried signs 8-year, $218 million with the Yankees, beating out the Red Sox. @JeffPassan on it

Re Friied - Feinsand also reporting the deal. 31 years old, injury prone, and has a postseason record on a par with Aaron Judge's. A perfect fit.

Re Verdugo: if they do sign him, at least we'll get to watch him push the record for grounding out to second base so far into the stratosphere that it will remain forever associated with Yankee pinstripes. Start clearing space in Monument Park - or better yet, paint a "24, 4-3" on the dirt in his honor when he retires.

8 years seems like a lot. Guy's 30, has never pitched over 185 innings, was hurt for a lot of 2023, and saw his ERA balloon from 2.55 to 3.25 in 2024. Plus, in 20 playoff appearances, he's 2-5, 5.10.

But hey, it's something.

So basically we got the in between version of Cole and Rodon... That works... still got shit for offense

Following the Dodgers playbook of stretching out the total payment to limit the AAV and salary cap hit. Good signing in the short term.

Watson! Hand me the strychnine, my good man!

Starting with the 2019 season he's second in innings and ERA to Cole, in MLB. He's someone who I've grumbled to myself, "Why can't we ever have someone like him"? For a few years now. I think that Nestor gets swapped out for Bellinger. In theory we have the makings of a nasty playoff staff (or is it staph?).

On paper, how long has it been since we have had a rotation like this?
