Where would the Yankees be without Aaron Judge, and what happens if he tweaks a gonad?
For starters, let's note that Judge's gonads are the size of weather balloons, and the ensuing black hole in the Yankee lineup would rival anything the poets of Calcutta ever conceived.
That said, wipe out his team-leading 11 HRs (2nd in MLB), and the Yankees would still have 46 dingers, 6th in MLB, just ahead of the Oakland Sacramento Las Vegas Boxcar Willie A's.
Ditch his 33 RBIs and 32 runs scored and - beyond the statistical cliff-dive - you've still attained a middle-of-the-pack total, above San Diego, Cleveland and Tampa. And the Yankees could be gaining the bat of - oh, let's say - Dominick Smith!, currently hitting a robust .222 at Scranton, giving new meaning to the word "replacement."
Statistically, sans Judge, the 2025 Yankees would be a namby-pamby, up-and-down, middle-of-the-road nothing burger.
But spiritually - ouch - here's where it gets gnarly. If Judge goes down, even for just two weeks, there is nobody - nothing, nada, nope - in the larder. What we'd have is a lineup that makes the 2013 Yankees of Vernon Wells & Pronk look like the Harlem Globetrotters, suiting up against Red Klotz and his Washington Generals. (Or, more simplified, we'd be the Generals.)
I say this not to scare you. Wait. Who am I kidding.? I say this to terrify you... Because these days, we should be absolutely pissing into our pantaloons, wondering when the ultimate shoe will drop on this wretched month? 'Tis the Season of the Tweak, people. Over the last few weeks, the Yankees have lost a) Clarke Schmidt, b) D.J. LeMahieu, c) Jazz Chisholm and d) Anthony Volpe - and while the duration of each setback remains unclear - (Schmidt might pitch tonight) - the only real positive has been than none were playing all that well, and it's not as if we lost an MVP candidate.
So... what happens if we lose Judge - not just an MVP candidate, but a Triple Crown leader? Welp, lemme tell ya what happens:
A complete and utter Yankee Chernobyl, with glowing wolves and charred porcupines. We'd watch Ben Rice try to fill the void, overcompensating and falling into a career-threatening slump. We'd watch Spencer Jones - the 23-year-old, would-be 6'7" Judge doppelganger, who leads the Eastern League in HRs, though he strikes out 44 percent of the time - struggle in the majors and get traded for a clone of Lyle Overbay.
Over the last four years, Judge has averaged 142 games per season. Two years ago, when he broke the wall in LA, he missed 50 games. It can happen here. In each game, the Yankees are one thin warning track away from a disaster movie that would make Roland Emmerich proud.
I don't mean to demean Paul Goldschmidt, who might be better than we dared hope, but last year, the Yankees had two great hitters, back to back. This year, they have one. We will always be one pitch, one dive, one wall away from disaster. 'Tis the Season of the Tweak. Beware...

Hail Judge, The Jupiterian.
You know who never goes on the IL? Boone.
Imagine a Yankee Universe where he's out for the season. Not wishing him ill BTW. Just maybe a mid life crisis and a decision to grab a backpack and travel the world with a 25 year old would-be Jordan Whateverherlastnameis.
(Ticket) Buyer Beware
Perhaps a harmless little game of pick-up basketball?
That is one great idea, AA. Go with what works.
True, BTR. However, even if Judge and other key players go down and the team ends up near or below .500, this will be a highly successful season for Hal because the Yankees currently lead all MLB in attendance.
Yes to all Duque. The Yankees are in a week division and overrated. The idiots attending the games are adding fuel to Cheapskate Hal's fire. He is making money, so there is no need to worry.
That's why I always say it's better for Judge not to steal bases and to bat #2, where he ends up running the bases and trying to steal.
Hoss, I saw that April 30 Keefe to the city article that you referenced. I agree with everything in there save Keefe's big stink about Judge batting #3 in that game. He said it's too bad BaBoone had Judge hitting #3 because the game ended with Judge in the on deck circle.
He's wrong. The problem with that is you can always make that argument, whatever position Judge was batting. If Judge was batting #1, and the #9 hitter made the last out, you could say it's too bad Judge was batting #1 and not #9 and so on. Anyways, you could also say that the real reason Judge did not come up in that game as the last potential out was that he got thrown out (or picked off) trying to steal earlier in that game. (Wouldn't you know it, that was the difference.)
Last night, Judge hit #2 and, in the 9th inning, it was Grisham, Judge and Bellinger for last chance saloon. So it ended up hurting the Yankees last night. In that situation, (and we've been through this before), the best chance for your team to score is to have your best hitter batting #3. The chances of at least one of two guys getting on base + your best hitter trying to drive one (or both) in. Of course, they all made out 1,2,3 and it didn't matter. That's the norm against closers in the 9th. The Yankee bullpen blowing all manner of leads in the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th? That's highly abnormal in baseball (but normal for BaBoone's Yankees).
Anyways, that's another reason why it's a losing gamble to bat Judge #2. You gave up the chance for a bigger inning in the 1st inning in exchange for the possibility of a last chance saloon at bat. What's the probability of success for a guy in that situation? Like 1 in 100, at best. Maybe not even. And for that you gave up the chance for a bigger 1st inning in 162 games, probably almost a quarter of Judge's at bats.
Sorry for the rant, but there's precious little else to talk about with the Yankees.
I'll stick to my guns and say this pathetic team still wins about 96 games. They usually end up with good regular seasons, no matter how shitty they look at times.
But you can add the Rays and the Orioles to the list of teams that would cook the Yankees in the playoffs. Rays a pathetic team? What did I tell you? If the Rays are a pathetic team, the Yankees are pathetic to the power of ten.
HoG - I really did think that you would have lowered your tally to 95 wins at this point.
Perhaps it is time for me to consult the I Ching ˚ ˚ ˚
"The act of 'following' is often seen as a lesser state to 'leading'. But leading requires knowledge and knowledge is gained from following those who are experienced and great. There is no shame in following one who has knowlege for that is how leadership is perfected. In order to lead one must know what following is. In order to follow well, one must be focused on leadership. A weak follower is one who follows without ambition. A weak leader is one who leads without a knowledge of following.
Can't we just push Boone off the GW Bridge or something?
The Book of Changes is great, lots of wisdom there. Lots of duality, two sides to every coin, you can't have one without the other.
I would prefer to roast him over an open fire.
That too was a winnable game yesterday, but BaBoone mailed it in. I don't know what their all time record on Sundays is under BaBoone, but I'm pretty sure it sucks. They usually lose on Sundays. Especially Sunday night games against the Red Sox. I'm surprised he didn't rest Judge yesterday. He likes to rest Judge on Sundays, no?
Tonight, are they going to play? I would think it's going to be a rain out, but it's going to rain tomorrow too. So maybe they try to get it in.
Hammer...Many Eastern philosophies/religions don't believe in duality because they see the two parts as one. 2 halves of a pie. Or individual energies as part of the communal whole. I agree with that thought. We are all connected.
Although we aren't connected closely enough to inherit any of Hal's money.
Ma Boone roasting on an open fire...
Jim Beam dripping from his nose...
Shit loud music causing talk to expire
And dorks dressed up like Juan Sotos
Everybody knows a turkey is what Boonie is
Hell, he's just not all that bright
Aging sots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to watch tonight
They know that Boone is on his way
He's got a lot of lousy moves for which we'll pay
And every other team is gonna spy
To see how Boonie fucks things up to make us cry
And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To fans from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Boone's an idjit
Cash too
Vivas is in the starting lineup. Viva Vivas!!!
Every time I see Judge batting 2nd, I see a badly constructed lineup made from a badly constructed roster. A championship team would have him batting 3rd or 4th, with a pair of .350 OBP batters ahead of him, at least one of home is a base-stealing demon.
But who am I kidding? The Yankees turn actual base stealers like Volpe into the second coming of Giancarlo Stanton. Not that we have to worry now, Volpe will be joining Stanton on the IL, once Boone snaps whatever's left of his shoulder by playing him.
Hammer, just to set the record straight, it was NOT me who was agreeing with The Estimable Keefe on that. Much as I respect Keefe's baseball acumen, I completely agree that Judge should be hitting 3rd.
Maybe it's just that I'm old school—"If it was good enough for the Babe, it's good enough for him!"—but I want my best hitter third. Or even fourth.
My feeling is this: you're almost never going to win a game against the other team's closer (The one exception in the majors: your New York Yankees). He's usually the hardest thrower on the staff, or has the trickiest pitch (The one exception: your New York Yankees).
I'd much rather have Judge come up early, with two men on, against some meh starter...then repeat two innings later, and maybe two innings after that. Then you can just take that big lead home (The one exception: you're Aaron Boone, and insist on pitching The Toms River Tormentor.)
Looks like we're in for nasty weather. Hope you are quite prepared to...waste one of our better starters. Yeah, more fan torture in the works.
Never, ever cancel a game ahead of time, no matter the forecast. Make the fans come out, spend a bunch on parking, concessions to keep the kids happy, scotch to keep the wife happy, maybe some souvenirs, then...oh, sorry, folks! Two-hour rain delay not withstanding, the game is canceled! Come back out and do it again sometime!
Don't like pitching to Tatis here...
...But hey, wha'do I know? Nice K.
Astounding what a bad team this is at fundamentals...and what an ass Rodon is. First he makes no effort to keep the Padres from stealing yet another base off the Yanks, then he manages to stand in the way of everyone while not going for that pop-up.
Neither one ending up costing the team, but it's yet another indication of how little discipline Boone has instilled in them.
i don’t understand why my favorite martian is on the bench against a righty. If he’s the second coming of (add the name of your favorite superstar past or present here) why isn’t he getting as many at-bats as possible? He either is or he isn’t, but we won’t find out with him sitting on the bench.
Can't believe Volpe is playing. That's a much more long-term, disabling injury just waiting to happen. It won't be a great loss, since he's not progressing as a ballplayer—but it's unfair to him.
Agreed, DickAllen! They need to decide on the guy this year. Maybe they worry about him negotiating a wet field, but come on. Time to see if he's for real.
Boy, is Wells a bad hitter.
Best to grind the little guy down into flour and make bread to feed to Hal and his Pal
And...here's the rain delay. So 4 excellent innings of pitching by Rodon, mostly wasted.
Always gives you a lot of confidence in a batter when his helmet falls over his eyes. Repeatedly. In the same at-bat.
I am unclear as to what role Devin Williams is supposed to play on this train wreck.
Fucking Williams boy is he worthless.
Dog shit
This inning has gone well, huh?
There goes Judge’s wondrous streak. He’s headed for Cashman town.
Williams single handedly destroying our season.
Nope
Major contributor fer sure
What an enjoyable game. 🍍
I was really worried in the off-season that we wouldn't be able to replace Clay Holmes.
To borrow a line from Jimi Hendrix, "it's enough to make you get up and ah SCREAM"!
Plus take away - I kinda enjoyed SINNERS
Hoss, sorry that I didn't make clear that you always wanted Judge hitting #3 or 4. Guess I assumed everybody knew that. I was only talking about Keefe's beef with Boone on that point.
