His father, Mutt Mantle, was a lead and zinc miner. Both Mutt and Mickey's grandfather Charles Mantle had played baseball on a mining company teams. Many of the Mantle men died early deaths due to Hodgkin's Disease which some suspect was linked to their exposure to dust inhaled from their mining jobs.
