"IT IS HIGH! IT IS FAR! IT IS... off the wall!" (Updated)

That headline? A direct quote from tonight.

John's head is not in the game.

His Granderson HR call is an utter disaster.

John's Posada HR call was subdued by a panic response to the Pesky Pole. He said himself, a moment later, that he cannot read balls off the Pesky Pole.

John coughed audibly. Don't radio people have a button to mute that? What on earth would make John think we want to hear him cough?

One saving grace: John is furious that Brooklynite Neil Diamond would wear a Red Sox cap and sing for these people.  Another saving grace:

Suzyn is already in midseason form. Up to a point.

She spent a good ten minutes before the first pitch complaining that Red Sox opening day ceremonies are fucking endless.

She took pains to describe weather she was dreading for tonight, even though it turned out nice.

But even Suzyn fell short of perfection.

She said -- and I'm certain that the crucial pre-comma words are verbatim, although I'm a little sketchy on the less important phrasing post-comma -- Suzyn said, "Unless age pops up its grey-headed head, this looks like a very solid team."

And, describing the first Yankee pitching change of 2010, she called Joe Girardi "Joe Torre."

***

UPDATE! Our own Alphonso predicted tonight's Yankee loss --and the forces that made it inevitable -- nearly five hours before game time:

As of this writing, it remains a huge question mark how John and Suzyn will perform behind the microphones tonight. Opening day against Boston, in Boston, in front of a national audience is enough pressure for these super stars, even when in prime health.

One thing is clear; if they are not at the top of their games, we won't be at the top of ours.

I think the greatest untold topic is Joba Chamberlain and how he his numbers have gotten progressively gotten worse.

2007: ERA of 0.37
2008: ERA of 2.60
2009: ERA of 4.75

He used to be amazing, a prodigy, the next marianno. Now he is extremely mediocre. Joba is nothing.

It took me to this point to finally realize what my mission in life is. That mission is to get Chan Ho Park off the Yankees. He is the greatest piece of crap ever in the history of feces.

Kay started off the game by saying they were in Baltimore. And the graphics "bug" they heaped so much praise on was behind on the count at least a dozen times. So YES was in midseason screw-up form.
And I'm really not looking forward to another hundred promos for O'Reilly's appearance on Centerstage during the next two games. I wish the radio broadcasts of the gameas weren't so far out of sync with my Verizon Fios pictures so listening to
John and Suzyn while watching worked for me.

You forgot his 2010 ERA of 6.75. He does suck!

but seriously...
In 2007 he didn't have any starts. In 2008, he started 12 games and relieved in 30. In 2009, he started almost exclusively (31 games, 1 relief appearance).

So it's really not surprising that his ERA has gone up so much, since he's been transitioning from the bullpen to the rotation, and in so doing, going through a lineup multiple times, having to rely on more pitches, etc...
