Giancarlo's big night in Bridgewater: A baker's dozen takeaways

Last night, last October's brightest Yankee star - Giancarlo Stanton - made his 2025 debut for the Double A Somerset Patriots. Twelve ponderings to ponderize.

1. He went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and a walk.

2. His two hits were singles, each a rope.

3. One of his hits went over the CF's head at 111.4 mph.

4. All he got was a single.

5. That's right: He smashed a ball over the CF's head and settled for a single.

6. I'm not kidding. A single.

7. Obviously, he played DH.

8. Somerset won, 8-1, led by 23-year-old 2B Roc Riggio, who went 2-for-5. (Hitting .286 on the year.)

9. Batting behind Stanton, 20-year-old George Lombard Jr. - our top prospect - went 1-for-3, lifting his 2025 BA to .259.

10. Stanton says he might play this weekend against Boston.

11. Let's hope he doesn't hit one off the Monster and get thrown out at first.

12. Ben Rice will probably become Stanton's late-inning defensive replacement.

13. That's a joke. Get it?

Possible batting orders.

There will be blood. Rice will get his due.

Looking forward to 400 foot singles that are hit so hard, their hitter can't make it past first.

Hell, we're lucky if he can make it to first.

For Stanton, MLB is like a sanctuary for exotic animals. He will be coddled, he will be babied, he will never be pushed, nor will he push himself to the point of injury. And still, he will end up injured. He's a delicate species and needs lots of care. And money. I wish he were anywhere else. His subtraction from the team would be the single biggest improvement.

If only Glassman, Bonehead and Ca$hole were capable of embarrassment. Our wide awake nightmare could end.

The Ellsbury wing of the Arod rehabilitation hospital has plenty of room available.

When his brother Sam has a child, then our Yankee rookie can truly be called Uncle Ben Rice.

$32M doesn’t buy what it used to…he,s under contact for 2 more years after this, then a hefty buyout in ‘28. Man, did we get taken on this deal. WTF was crashman thinking?

Our Dauntless Leader, Alphonso, tried to warn us. But I, for one, wouldn't listen. Meanwhile, the Red Sox grabbed up J.D. Martinez, who led them to yet another world championship. But hey, the deal got Bob Klapisch to write a book about what a genius Cashman is, and no doubt, Bob and his fellow Knights of the Press Box are dusting off Cashie's wall in the Hall.

Maybe we should try the great Papi mooning strategy for that day...

Meanwhile, people who will NOT be stars in the bigs:

—Roc Riggio (23 and still in Double-A)
—George Lombard, Jr. (just 20, but still hitting .259 in Double-A)

Oh, that Cashman!

Random thought. If Cheapskate Hal were to dig through the couch cushions, do we have what it would take to get Chris Sale from the Braves?

Riggio might have a future. College guy. Just second year of pro ball. He's moving up quickly, all things considered. And Lombard? A 20 year old hitting .259 at AA? Not dominating but not overmatched either. Encouraging. I bow to no one in my estimation of Cashman's talent wrecking abilities, but stoll too early to tell with these two, and there are some encouraging signs.

Let us take a moment to pause and hold Brian Wilson in the light. He passed today. RIP

Tonight's umpire is not good. Gifted the Yankees a run.

AboveAverage said...

Not watching yet - but I'm obligated to ask.....

Hey Rufus - Did the Umpire gift wrap it first and attach a big shiny bow on it?

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Nah, Jizz Chasm took an obvious third strike and the ump called it a ball. Then he walked on the next pitch.

At least he didn't get a gift basket from the ump.
