NEW YORK _ Top Yankee brassers are looking at the possibility of signing Salim Hamdan, convicted driver of terror CEO Osama bin Laden, to a 6-year contract, now that the famed "Taliban Tailgater" can walk free from federal custody in time for spring training.
Shortly after a Gitmo jury yesterday awarded Hamdan a 66-month sentence -- he's already stacked 60 -- the bearded highway hijacker signed a working agreement with superagent Scott Boras.
Once that happened, the Yanks and Redsocks instinctively launched a bidding war for Hamdan, who is said to possess 85-mile-an-hour gas on straightaways.
"As far as we can tell, this guy got a better deal than Carl Pavano," one source said. "We figured, what the hell, let's sign him."
Also interested is Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos, who may rename his home field "Hamdan Yards."
