John Sterling's Love For Us

Rainout
Last night, the Yankees won... but, for the first time, John Sterling withheld his signature Win Warble.

After a long and sleepless night, I think I know why.

This is John's way of preparing us.

Some day there will be no Win Warble, for there will be no John. When that day comes and forever after, he will be pulling for us to survive, to endure, to be all right, to go on winning. John, who studies winning, believes we stand a better chance if we feel just a little bit of the pain now. Think of it as a vaccination of the heart.

It hurt John to hold that Win Warble back, make no mistake. But each and every fan along the New York Yankees Radio Network -- from the swaggering captain of industry to the humble fish-monger -- means everything to John. No injury is too painful, if it benefits us.

I know what you're asking: "So, if John is willing to sacrifice for fans along the New York Yankees Radio Network, what can we can do for him in return?" The answer lies buried in the roar of last night's silence. Listen to it closely, and you can hear what he is asking of us. Only the impossible. Only the absolutely necessary. Only this:

We have to love John Sterling enough to let him go.

A world without John is a world I don't want to live in.

Perhaps we should look at the signs, shorter win warrbles, missed home run calls, not putting in the effort to make calls for Henski and Gardner... Is John sick? Could this be the end? Do not go gentle into that goodlight, John.. do not go gentle...

I don’t want to be a fan of the Yankees if John Sterling isn’t on my radio announce team.

Blame el Dickhead.

He messed with things that he should not have.

This is what happens.

Karma is a bitch.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with John. He could outlive every fan who leaves a comment in this thread. It's just that nothing, and I mean nothing, lasts forever. John could retire, or radio could go out of business, or some freaky accident could happen--remember Bhopal? But whatever occurs-- John seems to be telling us-- the Yankees will go on, and so must our hearts.

Who could have predicted the warble would sound silent? Surely we were stunned, however, we could all feel that little warble it in our hearts. Perhaps even more so.

Now if we could just get him to be silent for the entire game.
