Yankeetorial: It is time to think the unthinkable... Rebuilding Year

My fellow Yankians...

We are approaching the crossroads of Routes 95 and 2.

That's 1995 and 2002.

If we turn onto I-95, we keep our kids, like the minor league shortstop Derek Jeter and that catcher Jorge Posada, even though neither may ever hit. We don't trade Andy Pettitte, and we give Mariano Rivera a shot at closing, rather than trade for a new John Wetteland. We haven't won anything for 16 years, so we're looking long-term to build the team.

Or we can roll onto the Route 2 Exit. We can trade for established stars and try to win. Raul Mondesi is out there. So is Tony Womack. We are, after all, the Yankees. We win every year. We needn't develop young players, because teams are always looking to dump salaries. We play year-to-year.

Which way do we turn?

This morning, the Mets poohbahs would give their left nut to send us Carlos Beltran before he starts hitting .240 again. They'd snag a few of our young arms, plus rid themselves of an overpiced reminder of a decade in Hell.

Today, every team in baseball with half a brain is scouting the Yankee farm system and staying close the phone, hoping we will call.

Today, barring a tornado that destroys the Redsock or Rays team bus, the Yankees are a third place team in the 2011 AL East -- closer to Toronto (in fourth) than the Wild Card winner.

Which way do we turn?

unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) we don't have much to give away.
Hold onto the Killer B's and Slade and Gary Sanchez. Not much else.

I think only Banuelos has a shot amongst the three B's.

We could use Jesus as our DH. Or my man, Vasquez.

Romine and Sanchez are worth hyping a bit longer. We'll only need one of them, given Russell Martin.

And Kei Igawa is sure to start turning heads. Isn't it getting close to his walk year?

However, we have no outfield prospects and no infield prospects.

Around here, this is at the intersection of Rt. 2 and Rt. 95.

Meanwhile, WTF is up with Posada?
