Defending Yankees fans
Re: Norman Chad's half-baked, misguided, jealousy-laden March 9 commentary against all things Yankees and all things New York.
He complains the Yankees didn't need a new stadium, argues that the team is behaving improperly in the face of a recession and that its fans are loutish.
As a longtime Yankees season ticket holder and a visitor to many other stadiums, it was time for a new building.
Look at Indy, with gorgeous new facilities for football, basketball and baseball.
Loutish New Yorkers have up until this season had none of these things.
Madison Square Garden is a complete dump compared to Conseco.
The "loutish New York fan" is a great myth. The vast majority of fans in my section are respectful and well-behaved.
And when our teams win championships in any sport, you don't read reports in the paper of rioting, fires and overturned cars and buses as you do in other cities.

I'm a loutish fan who liked the old Stadium and continues to like MSG. I guess I'm a myth.
After reading Norman Chad's diatribe and the NYT's sports page today, can someone explain to me why the Yankees are evil for spending money in the face of a recession? I thought that was part of the problem that no one was spending money.
