I like your thinking on Wells. But I might not sign Lackey but still take part in the case to drive his price up. Next year has a ton of good FA starters so much like when the Yanks bailed on Santana, they might be best off waiting.
Wells isn't a switch hitter. He bats right-handed. Poorly.
So on one hand, we have the pro-Lackey argument: Sign Lackey, win WS #28.
On the other hand, we have the anti-Lackey argument... ... ... but let's drive the price up, since we don't need him anyway because Wang is coming back and at least two of Joba/Hughes/IPK/Gaudin will break with tradition and not be a total bust as a starter.

Frankly, I wanna see Chone "Shawon" Figgins. Nobody's talking him up, and therefore can be had for cheap under the radar. Then you let Damon & Matsui walk, get Wells or Halladay or Lackey or whatever.
