Bucky? Aaron? Bambino? Forget it. Here's the shot heard around the world.

What's the greatest all-time Yankee home run? Buck Dent? Aaron Boone? Chamblis for the pennant? Leyritz v. the Braves? Ruth's 60th? Ruth's called shot? Maris' 61st? Jeter's 3000th? Jeter's shot v. Jeffrey Maier? Scott Brosius on the second night? Mantle off Barney Schultz? Mattingly v. Mariners? Slade Heathcott last September? Or how about this...

Because in the end, it's What have you done for us, lately?

There have been many of them through the years, but the most impressive was Mickey Mantle's at Griffith Stadium back in the 1950s. I believe it was measured at 563 feet.
Listening to the game on radio, before television ruined the game.

1) Chambliss vs. KC for the pennant because... It's the only time that baseball made me cry.

2) Bucky Dent -- Cutting class to watch the game. Extra points for beating Boston.

3) Reggie's 3rd of the game. -- If you don't think it was amazing I suggest you go watch the video and keep your eyes on Munson in the dugout. He doesn't go over to congratulate him but the look on his face is a combination of wonder and acknowledgement. Awesome.

4) Jim Leyritz 96 Game 4 Because - Hey, maybe we can beat these guys.

5) and to wrap it up Mantle's 535th HR against Denny McLain and even better that McLain decked Pepitone with the next pitch.

Sitting in my coffin-sized bedroom very near the end of Mantle's career, when he could barely walk and/or hit anymore. The parents in bed and the rest of the flat dark, so must have been a West Coast game. I'm sitting on the bed (no place else to sit) listening on my off-white and getting offer transistor radio (a GE, of course, it being Schenectady and Mom being an employee who could go to the employee store). The Yankees are losing in the 9th, I think by two, and Mantle comes up with two out and two on, and my fevered young brain says, "Come on, Mick, hit one...just hit one like you used to, and win this one for us."

So Mick gets up there and whaddya know, he parks one. Rizzuto goes crazy. The Yankees take the lead. The other guys fold like a wet hankie in the bottom of the inning. We win.

As fuzzy and vague as that one is, it's still my favorite.

I've been trying to do a poll on this, but for some reason, the poll capability on Blogger seems to no longer work. One of these days...

Oh, and what's the least memorable Yankee HR?

I'd say Denny McClain making a show of serving up Mantle's 500th. Sickening.

Hard to beat Bucky Fucking Dent, if only because of how it demoralized the hated redsocks. Yet my favorite has to be A-Rod's 3,000. Memorable for me because I was there to see it happen. Also memorable because of how I imagined it upset the front office.

JOHN M, LOVE THAT STORY ABOUT MICKEY........ I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS 7 0R 8 YEARS OLD, AND MANTLE WHO WAS MY FATHERS FAVORITE, HIT ONE HOME RUN IN GAME 1 OF A DOUBLE HEADER, THEN HIT ANOTHER HOMER IN GAME 2...... I HAD TO RUN OUTSIDE AND REPORT EACH HOMER TO HIM AS HE WAS WORKING ON SOMETHING OUTSIDE............. I REMEMBER MANTLE, BUT I'M SORRY TO SAY, IT WAS AT THE END OF HIS CAREER, AND THOSE DAYS WERE LEAN FOR THE YANKS.

Somebody here has to stand up for the past. How about:
Ruth's 60th
Ruth's called shot
Pretty much every single one he hit in 1921, probably the greatest season the history of seasons
Gehrig's 4th in one game
Joe Di's return from injury to dismantle the Sux in Fenway late in '49
Maris in '60 or '61: pick one
I saw none of these, but i know they happened, and they're a big reason why I've been a slave to the Yankees.
Personal faves from my lifetime have been mostly covered here, especially Munson v. Bird as well as some of Bernie's playoff clouts - does he get enough credit for how good he was?
I will add this one:
Roy White to right field at Fenway for the only run in a Stottlemyre shutout during a cold rainy afternoon in April or May 1968. The rivalry came into focus for me there.

Steve Balboni. Two homers off Shane Rawley in August of 1989. Metrodome.

Bucky Dent.

I was there. Favorite Yankee game ever.

Woke up on the couch to see Aaron Boone at bat. Asked the missus what the score was. Told her the Yankees will win this inning.

Reggie (I still think he's an asshole, but what a player) seeing seven pitches in a game -- first four balls and a walk. Next three from three different pitchers all over the fence. Three straight pitches out for homers. No three ball counts there.
