On a desperate night in the Bronx, the Mandalorian saves us

Every great Yankee has a monster career moment.

Reggie's three-HR night in the series.

Jeter's flip toss to the plate, Coney's no-hitter, Thurman's blast into the bullpen, Mickey's 365-footer...

Ruth's 60th, Roger's 61st, Judge's 62nd...

Not sure yet if Anthony Rizzo will someday be considered a Yankee great. If he makes the Hall of Fame, it might be with a Cubs hat. Still, make no mistake: Last night, Rizzo had his Matterhorn  moment, at least  in pinstripes.

Of course, you know by now that Rizzo's towering HR in the 8th rescued the Yanks from a soul-crushing - perhaps terminal - loss to a team that has dominated them. The Rays would head into today's game behind their ace - Shane McClanahan, 7-0 - looking to utterly destroy the confidence and swagger of a rival that was supposed to be competitive. We would be facing the very real possibility of being swept at home, last place in the AL East, perhaps for a while.

Instead, the Yankees see a pinprick of light, and Tampa is reeling not just over last night's devilish loss, but the painful news that their No. 2 starter - Drew Rasmussen, who threw 7 shutout innings Thursday night  - is out with a barking elbow, the worst diagnosis a pitcher can hear.

Make no mistake: The Yanks face a long hard slog. Last night's jubilation will end at 1:05 p.m. After Tampa, they go to Toronto - to face perhaps a less menacing rival, but one that despises us even more than the Rays do.

If the Yankees win today and tomorrow, they could leapfrog both Boston and  Toronto by Monday. And it would all be the result of Rizzo's HR.

Either way, years from now, long after 2023 is filed away and forgotten, we will remember Rizzo's HRs on his Mandalorian Bobble Head night, back in the days...

His great Yankee moment.

“sniff, sniff…” the stench of unbridled optimism!

They'll still trail the toilet bowls.

That in itself is depressing.

Swirling somewhere in the ether there’s a wonderful post to be written here deep diving into memorable promotional giveaway days throughout the history of the Yankees as well as other professional sports teams.

And as much fun as I’m sure many would be to read about - none of them would come close to the Rizzo magic that happened last night in the Bronx.

Given its impact - perhaps more Star Wars/other popular franchise/product-themed bobble-head promos can be squeezed into the remaining home games of the 2023 season.

Judge as Chewbacca, Boone as a bubble blowing Spock, Stanton as a broken bag of Lays potato chips, to name but a few.

Imagine the possibilities . . .

If they win today and tomorrow? Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

That one last night was the miracle win. There may not be another one like that the rest of this year, let alone in the next two games.

Little Anthony was imperial as well last night.

https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/ai-powered-virtual-girlfriend-caryn-marjorie-snapchat-influencer-rcna84180

"While CarynAI aims to give users an intimate experience, it is not supposed to engage in "sexually explicit" interactions.

However, after outlets reported that the chatbot does so when prompted, Marjorie issued a statement to Insider saying that the AI was "not programmed to do this and has seemed to go rogue. My team and I are working around the clock to prevent this from happening again."

BTW, the phrase "the AI was "not programmed to do this and has seemed to go rogue." IS our collective future.

We are all going to die. Enjoy today's game.

Most of the women in my life have been virtual.

This blog is no place for optimism.

Who needs Caryn AI when there are free services such as those Live Cam girls (on certain IPTV streaming media TV boxes) or even sites like YouPorn. The Twitter report says that Caryn charges $ 1.00 a minute so I bet she makes as much small-talk as possible.

Two on, nobody out. Zero runs scored.

ANALytics at its best. Hit balls hard. Right into gloves.

Scooter is rolling in his grave.

I have a weird and unfamiliar feeling we can win today.

It's unsettling.

BTR999 said...

Snap out of it, JM!

BTR999 said...

Looks like another offense washout today.

JM said...

Waiting for a big home run. Or a rookie RBI single.

BTR999 said...

Game over.

JM said...

Well, there's the big home run. Unfortunately, it was for Tampa.

Cortes looks lousy today. Boone finally takes him out.

Publius said...

Nestor's been bad for a few starts now.

JM said...

Judge on pace for less than 30 home runs. Whoo.

Well, we're within reach after that inning.

JM said...

Volpe! Steals a run there.

JM said...

Kay and O'Neill were talking about a wild pitch a second before it happened.

ranger_lp said...

Half hour ago the game didn’t look like a Yankee Classic…

Now…

JM said...

Judge!!!!!

ranger_lp said...

JUDGE!!!

JM said...

We're ahead...omg.

JM said...

This could make up for Cole's meltdown.

ranger_lp said...

I think the hip is better…

ranger_lp said...

Heard on the radio before I got home that batting average against Nester third time through the order is .429…

Ranger - means Nestor should be pitching long relief. 2-3 innings and gone. Right?

How do we splain this to Lorna boone?

Rufus T. Firefly said...

From earlier, big head said that the master is out because of college graduations.

ranger_lp said...

No means that Nestor needs to make adjustments…they tried moving Nestor on the pitching rubber…

JM said...

He's giving commencement speeches or just cruising drunken sororities?

ranger_lp said...

Nestor didn’t have to these issues last year…

JM said...

Nestor and Trevino, one time All Stars. Never again.

AboveAverage said...

Now if we can score five more runs we might win this game

BTR999 said...

hmmm…..game not over

JM said...

RIP Don Denkiger.

JM said...

This ain't over.

ranger_lp said...

Both teams have no bullpen…

I must amend my earlier statements about Anthony Volpe. It was a bit too harsh to lump him in with Fred Stanley and Jim Mason. He does seem to be thumping the ball a little bit. A young Tom Tresh, perhaps?

Rufus T. Firefly said...

JM, triplets (TRIPLETS!) are gradumertating colidge. Big head said his bills are over. Paulie Awshucks just laughed at him.

I wouldn't wish that on anyone, even people I hate.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

If Bonehead pinch hits Hicks, we know he's trying to throw the game.

Higgy HRs -- must need rest, PH for him. Only in the alternate Bonehead anti-universe.

JM said...

Boone leaving Holmes in too long. Dangerous.

JM said...

Crap, Rufus, I was hoping it was the drunk sorority girls.

JM said...

Bad call in our favor. Whew.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

I think that is more Coney's style.

JM said...

Definitely.

DickAllen said...

Wow. Is this really happening?

Publius said...

How long's it take to learn Spanish? Can I get there in an off-season? I can't listen to Justin Shackil call Yankees games for the rest of my life.

ranger_lp said...

Yankees Win!!!

ranger_lp said...

Back to back belly to belly Yankee Classics…

Parson Tom said...

Holy cow!

JM said...

Jesus, my feeling was right. Seemed impossible after that grand slam.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

JM, you have a feeling about tonight's Powerball numbers?

Asking for a friend.

BTR999 said...

JM, you wuz right.

- Nasty Nestor Now Nice Nestor.
-Judge still alive
-Loved Volpe’s small ball run
- Peralta new closer?

Just to keep it real, Donaldson could start his minor league rehab next week.

Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside said...

JM - I see you felt the rally in your bones early. You were the first that’s for sure. I eventually joined you :)

JM said...

It was a strange and mystifying experience.

Ken of Brooklyn said...

That was a total shocker,,,,, JM, you're our very own IIHIIFIIC Nostradomus!!!!!

Parson Tom said...

Two consecutive total shockers. My attitude sucks. I was certain they'd lose even when they were winning.
