Jim Bransfield of the The Middletown (CT) Press enthuses about John & Suzyn:
Here’s how big a Yankee nut-case I am.I wanted to listen to John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman, not the thoroughly annoying Joe Buck and John Smoltz on TV, and I wanted to be alone. So I got in my trusty Hyundai Accent and drove around for three hours listening. I marveled at how fair they were, praising the Astros and the Astros’ fans, saying how amazing playoff games are, and correctly pointing out that it’s tough to win when you get only three hits. They talked about the great Astros’ pitching — and the great Yankee pitching — and what a marvelous player Jose Altuve is.And at game’s end, Sterling gave a great call: “Popped to center field, they’re going to get it. Springer makes the catch, ball game over, ALCS over, the Astros win!” And he gave it with enthusiasm.Class act from a class guy.In the end, Sterling is a baseball guy. Not a Joe Buck who does everything — a baseball guy. When I got home, I went out on my deck and did what I do every year at season’s end and took down my ‘NY’ flag that has been flying since the season opened in April, rolled it up, and put it away for next April.

It's fun to lampoon Sterling's boundless ego and professional ineptitude, but everyone on this blog knows that this duo sets new standards in incompetence every time the on-air light goes on. No one can work with this guy: Joe Angel gave it a try for one year and threw up his hands. Charley Steiner was good enough for ESPN and Vin Scully, but not Sterling. And Waldman's commentary is on the level of the dumbest callers to radio talk shows.
Enough is enough. Can you imagine how wonderful it would be to have a team like John Sciambi and Jessica Mendoza as the Yankee radio team? It would be like trading in your Yugo for a Maserati.
Hold on a second there. its almost as if you don’t like the Master. Harrumph sir!
Harrumph, indeed!
Jessica Mendoza?? She doesn't even rate in the top 20 color commentators, in my book.
Typical Stat-Boy idiocy. Fuck you, Stat-boy. LB (No J)
Apart from being accurate all the time, there are different aspects at play too. Now there may be a slight difference because I am almost always listening from about 1am until 5am. S o I have different needs.
I mentioned it before here, one of the most pleasant things about the Master is his voice. Really, compared to most of the other announcers he is, well, Sterling. With the exception of Vin Scully, there is not a better voice to hear the Yankees play. Even during the ALCS I had the radio on, even though I also watched on tv and more important, even though the radio commentary is always about 3 pitches out of sync with the images. Which, in a sense, makes it also makes the less accurate calls more fun.
By the way, watching like that it also turns out that there aren't that many funky calls.
Yes, both John and Suzyn were extremely fair to the Astros as they have been all year to all teams.
I would really hate it if he were to be replaced.
I've heard a lot of other teams' announcers, and they are all, without fail, boring as hell. And with bland, generically mediocre voices.
The Yankees should resist the tide and keep people who have some character and personality, not sounding like neighbors at a suburban barbecue.
Anonymous, I will keep my Yugo, thank you very much.
And I happen to also delight in the anomalous, New England accent of Suzyn.
They are indeed different, for better and for worse, and I cherish the difference!
I am pretty sure their contract is up but if John returns, he'll hit 80 during the season. I bet he'd sign another contract if offered but will he get the chance? Talk about an existential threat to our favorite Yankees blog. Would Duque pull a Derek Jeter/Bob Sheppard move and just keep going under same masthead?
Duque you'd better be planning for this contingency.
Joe Castiglione, the Red Sox radio announcer is one of the most monotone and boring announcers I've ever heard and his pairing with the turnstile-like movement of announcer pairings make it almost unbearable to listen. And Suzyn would be a lot better if she didn't spend 3/4 of the time covering for the sightless Sterling.
Will they take down Mariano's retired number when he dies? No! We can go one honoring The Master forever. In fact, after he retires, I think our kind hosts should invite him on.
I vote that when Sterling is no longer doing Yankee broadcasts, we refocus this blog to whatever he's doing.

I find it remarkable that anyone on this blog finds it "entertaining" in a radiocast never to know what the score is, what kind of pitch is being thrown, what the count is (half the time he doesn't say after a pitch), to have game details tossed off cavalierly as annoying interruptions of some digressive incoherency or protracted platitude of the moment, never to know if a batter strikes out swinging or looking (STRUCK HIM OUT! is a TV call, not a radio call), never to know the exact positioning of runners ("two on, two out" is also a TV call--is that first and second? First and third? Second and third? We are never told.)
Howie Rose and Josh Lewin have fine voices and paint effortlessly skilled and detailed pictures of the action that don't miss a beat--whereas Sterling seems to miss entire plays or innings in his reveries of self-adoration. The guy wants to think he's one of the big boys, so he pathetically dresses for TV even though he's a radio guy. He can't abide a competent associate, but he loves having Waldman as an appendage--he knows she will never threaten his pre-eminence.
You can deride this or that out-of-towner, but there are countless young play-by-play talents out there who run circles around Sterling on every count, and equally abundant analysts who would put Waldman to shame. And anyone who thinks that Jessica Mendoza is not a superb analyst is an insecure sexist pig with a VERY SMALL PENIS who is intimidated by women who are smarter than he is--and that's you, TEENY WEENY BOY. She certainly occupies an Olympus of baseball erudition and insight compared to the hapless, barstool rambling of Waldman.
Remember--this is the only major market franchise with TV and radio announcers who would never be considered for national assignments on the big networks. Quite a turnabout from the days when Mel Allen at his peak was doing every major national sporting event of the day (Rose Bowl games [in the pre-Super Bowl era], All-Star games, World Series, etc.) because of his nonpareil excellence and competence. No one would ever accuse the Sterling-Kaye tandem of either.
It's "Kay", not "Kaye". jeez..
As for KD being an idiot:
