Even with our $300 million ACE on the mound, we cannot beat the Tampa Bay Rays. We can't even get a lead.
Our line-up is pretty lame. A few examples should suffice:
1. We have a .100 hitting catcher who specializes in long home runs, strike outs, grounding into double plays and passed balls. His arm is becoming suspect as well.
2. We have a back-up catcher who has not hit a ball hard since he was in his mid-thirties.
3. We have an experiment at shortstop that is beginning to look as though it won't earn CDC approval for phase 2 trials.
4. We have one left fielder who may have crossed his sell-by date, and another who looks like he is playing with flippers on. Neither are hitting.
5. Our centerfielder, a tradition of speed, defense and power for the Yankees, is batting .220, and has a history of injury once he begins to swing the bat.
6. The team is missing its best two players ( LeMahieu and Judge ), and now we are down our best closer. (That other $300+million guy is also on the IL but no one really cares ).
7. We are getting more than we had a right to expect from Urshela and Voit. Although Urshela's offense has faded since Boone hit him at clean-up. He is a great hitter in the 7th or 8th spot. Not in the middle of the line-up.
7-A. Our current DH ( Ford ) is a .200 hitter ( when hot ) who has good power at the stadium.
8. Suddenly, a team that got so much from its youth last year, is getting nothing from its youth this year. Unless, that is, we consider "Red Thunder" a youth. And the Yankees still show no confidence in his defense.
9. The guys who call the game ( Cone, Kay and O'Neil from his basement ) keep praising Boone, but the Yankee manager has made numerous mistakes...in a short season... that have cost us games. He is managing at a " C" level....a long way from an "A."
A team can't win like this. Cole gave up only 2 runs and that was far too much. It was the margin by which we lost.
So forget about flying another World Championship flag this year. We won't even be at the game.

We can certainly beat the bad teams like drums, but against small ball, contact hitting Tampa, which also has big time pitching, we can't even make it to the gig. We don't measure up, for sure.
One other point, I seem to remember us beating up a Tampa pitcher in the previous series in Tampa. The very next game, they started throwing at our guys, dusting three of them. How many Tampa hitters have our pitchers dusted? When your pitchers don't protect you, hitters stop hitting. Aggressive play and small ball usually beats passive teams and money ball home run derby hitting.

It is amazing how they have let the Tampa Bay Rays—THE TAMPA BAY RAYS! THE TEAM THAT KILLED BASEBALL!—get in their heads.
It was bad enough when Torre let that happen with the Red Sox. But the Sox, at least, were a ferociously talented team, doped to the gills on all the latest PEDs.
The Rays are remarkably devoid of first-class talent. But simply by concentrating and executing well, they are able to repeatedly humiliate our New York Yankees and with their newfound swagger they have left our boys looking pathetic and helpless.
It is indeed a fallen age.
Horace, you speak my mind completely. I kept looking at - WHO THE HELL ARE THESE GUYS? - there’s not a single first-rate talent on that team except for the pitching staff.
But then again, when I look at this current Yankees team, they have the look of a AAAA group that thinks it ought to win just because they’re wearing pinstripes. No enthusiasm. All in all, a pretty dull bunch.
Makes watching baseball a thing I would do housework to avoid.

Doesn't matter though. Whether it's an old hand from our "stellar" bullpen or a no-name, they'll give up any lead
We may end up being grateful that this season is short.

Bottom line is it is too soon to write them off. Judge, DJ (stanton) Gleybar can all be back by the time the playoffs start.
What scares me is how bad the starting pitching is. They still can't get out of the 4-5th inning. Cole excepted.
The position players will come back. There are no starting pitchers on the IL. (yet)

Our defense has been piss-poor, no situational hitting skills, Boone can't possibly be calling the shots, the lineups and bullpen management Must be coming from Cashman's Best and Brightest. Right? When this latest injury pandemic becomes diagnosed, the headlines will read, "Missiles headed to New York, news at eleven". Well, at least we have a deep, athletic, talented group that is beating down the doors to bravely fill the breach. Oh, that's riiight, they crashed and burned. Let's get moist that Cashman saved a buck and let Romine show his talents, which so far are way greater than Gary "Sleepy" Sanchez. This team better get their backbone players back, like a week ago. Because they look like beaten dogs. Sorry, but it's been decades since I've been so utterly stunned and pissed with the Team.
