The Rays Went Down Looking

Congratulations to the traitorous running dogs of Los Angeles.

It's never a good thing when the team that betrayed Brooklyn wins it all. But I can't say I didn't feel a certain schadenfreude when both Marcel Marceau and Adamseseseses took a called third strike to cut short the Rays' last gasp.

Three True Outcomes indeed.

I suppose if the Dodgers had been as classless as our American League champions they would have played some famous Tampa Bay song to mock the harpooned Rays...except, of course, that there are no famous songs about Tampa Bay. Or Tampa. Or St. Petersburg.

Well, congratulations to everybody for getting through it. It was still a cheese season and the Dodgers are still a cheese champion. But they have, at least, been pretty much the best non-cheating team in baseball for the last four seasons now, and it's time to give the devil his due.

Now, time to turn to our marvelous football, basketball, and hockey teams!

Kevin Cash, analytics my ass.

From the NY Post...

"Snell wasn’t the only one who thought Cash’s early hook was ill-advised.

Alex Rodriguez, who is working on the Fox pre and postgame shows, gave a harsh assessment of the decision on Twitter.

“Computers running the game,” Rodriguez tweeted. “Not humans. Binders lead to blinders. Manage with blinders on, you miss what’s actually happening in real time.”

What if they held a WS and nobody watched? Baseball has been my favorite sport since I was a kid 60 some years ago but I literally forgot that the games were on Monday and Tuesday and did not watch a single pitch. Wow, I remember camping out in front of the TV and bringing transistor radios to school to listen to the 60's WS games. Despite the admonition, I am crying in baseball.
I vow today to attend some minor league games within 50 miles of my house in 2021 to see if I can recapture what was once a joy in my life.[Rochester Red Wings, Syracuse Chiefs , Batavia etc., back in the day. There was literally nothing legal that was more fun than attending Syracuse Chief games with a bunch of college friends on a sunny, but cold day, adding airplane size bottles of booze to stadium pop and coffee]

Did anyone feel that the WS was a referendum on new baseball versus old baseball? Yes I know analytics is being used by every team but as someone on the radio put it, the Rays are the face of what's bad with baseball as us older folk who have watch this game forever see it. The Rays had a good run, but in the end, analytics may have met their demise in the clinching game, in fact...take that back, I believe it did...yes third time around will haunt them in the off-season.

Buck and Smoltz were hammering the analytics idea pretty hard last night. Smoltz kept saying that over 162 games (or in this case 60) they made sense but in any individual game you have to look at what is going on.

"Binders are blinders" and may I add BUNT AGAINST THE SHIFT!

Archie,

"There was literally nothing legal that was more fun than attending Syracuse Chief games with a bunch of college friends on a sunny, but cold day, adding airplane size bottles of booze to stadium pop and coffee]"

Amen to that. For me it was in Yankee Stadium and sitting in the last row in the upper deck to smoke a J before moving down to better seats but yes, it was high point (no pun - well maybe a little one) of my fandom. The best way to spend a Tuesday or any other night in August.

Well, in the end I guess it was the Dodgers' pitching: you're not going to win many games when you score just one run.

But yeah, two of your leading hitters going down with the bat on your shoulders, in the ninth inning of a game with the World Series on the line?

Add to that the incessant pitching changes, the refusal to bunt or hit to the opposite field against the shift, the way nearly every run scores on a homer (yes, guys are still juicing, but even those who aren't swing for the fences every time up), and the elaborate styling after each and every dinger...it all ads up to something that looks more like a game show than the baseball we knew and loved.

Hell, the most exciting moment in this year's playoffs came when two different guys booted the ball around like Little Leaguers.

Unless your own team is playing, these games have very little appeal.

The Dodgers are literally the Rays with more money. Their analytics departments is probably bigger tbh. The guy who turned the Rays around to begin with is running the Dodgers. The idea that analytics didn't completely win out a is laughable.
