Yanks of 2004 can breathe easier: They remain the greatest collapse in baseball history

Well, well, well... Tampa won last night, achieving what we surely would not have: Elimination of the vile, forever-tarnished Houston Astros.

Thus, the 2004 Yankees keep sole ownership of the most shameful, shit-pie meltdown in sports history. Hooray for us.

Sixteen years later, the Yankees have yet to take even a minor revenge upon Boston, the team it dominated, once upon a time, in a universe long, long ago and far, far away.

In this sad, Hal Steinbrenner-led millennium, the Redsocks have more rings to flash, more flags to raise, and more championships to celebrate. They function as our masters, outwitting us at every turn.

And now, their strategy of tanking in the abbreviated 2020 season will bring them the 4th pick in next year's draft. And all our talk about signing Trevor Bauer or others... it must take into account Boston's willingness to spend.

Thus, the Yankees - by far, America's richest sports team - will agonize over whether they can re-sign their best player, D.J. LeMahieu, due to all the wasted money going to Giancarlo Stanton, Aroldis Chapman and the cast of Schitt's Creek.

Meanwhile, fan cries for change are derisively dismissed by the Yankee-owned or controlled media, a system of modern day courtiers. The fundamental lie - that the Steinbrenner family simply cannot afford these high-priced players - remains the core philosophy of those who cover the team.

Congrats to Tampa, gold standard of the AL East. But a warning: They should beware the Blue Jays and Orioles, both ascending teams.

And who knows, maybe the Yankees will trade for another Javier Vasquez! There is always a Wild Card in our future.

At some point some of these Rays will want to be paid when their turn comes around. They can't play together forever. Yeah it looks good now but...

And thanks to fucking goddess that the Rastos lost. We would never had heard the end of that...oh we didn't need buzzers or garbage can tops...and on that subject, why did Altuve keep looking out to left field on his last at bat...it was like a lot of times?

Go Rays.

Fuck you Altuve.

Javier Vasquez was a serviceable right handed starter. Who happened to have his two worst years in the majors pitching for the Yankees. What are the odds?

Fuck you to death Javier Vasquez, with dismembered body parts of Hal and Altuve.

14 decent years n the majors, 12 of them decent to excellent. Two complete stinkers with The Yankees.

Seriously, fuck you to death Javier Vasquez, with the dismembered and rotting body parts of Hal and Altuve.

Good point, Warbler.

And with Vazquez, as with so many Yankee pitchers over the years, you can see almost exactly where it all went down.

2004, first half: Vazquez was 10-5, 3.56, 105 hits, 32 walks, and 95 Ks in 118 2/3 innings. Pretty good.

2004, second half: 4-5, 6.92, 90 hits, 28 walks, 55 Ks in just 79 1/3 innings.

In the playoffs, he got hammered in his one start, against the Twins, then hammered in two relief efforts against Boston.

Obviously, something happened to his arm around midseason. Yanks made him part of the deal for the Unit, but he was bad in AZ, too, then worse with the White Sox in 2006.

He had a much better year in Chicago in 2007—maybe he learned how to pitch with a bad arm, or it got better. Then he stunk it out again, then had his best year in the majors with Atlanta.

So at 33, Cashman apparently decided he had conquered whatever was wrong with him. Well, that was a not unreasonable conjecture. But he traded 3 fairly useful players for him and for Boone Logan—and Vazquez was a free agent after the next season. Thus he walked off the team after his awful 2010, had a good year with Florida, then retired.

Some of this is bad luck—but there is as well the blatant inability to really assess a pitcher, or to take note of where he was the second time around. It's just incompetence.

Got hammered. By the Twins. In the playoffs. Nuff said.

Fuck you Hal, and Cash and Javier.

Javier Vasquez was Sonny Gray 1.0.

So now, for the World Series, the "travel day" has reappeared. WTF? The custom that might have bailed out the Yanks is back—now that we're out of it.

The reality is that the 3 most financially solid sports franchises are the Cowboys, Dodgers and the Yanks. Guess which one always cries poverty.
That beer and Coke is $32.00?, Thank You Hal, may I have another.
I am taking a merely analytical view of the Yankees from now on. Watching them like time lapse photography of an over-ripening banana. Seeing how rotten they can truly become. I will not invest any emotional cache with them until two of three things happen, Hal sells, Cashew is fired and Boone is fired.
I hate the water carrying leech-scribes more than ever. Where is Dick Young when you need him?
