Well, well, well.

Boston Herald:
FORT MYERS — The Red Sox bullpen suffered another blow on Wednesday afternoon, when Major League Baseball announced that knuckleballer Steven Wright was suspended 80 games for violating the performance enhancing drug policy.
Wright, 34, tested positive for Growth Hormone Releasing Peptide 2 (GHRP-2) and will be out until at least late June. He will not be eligible for the postseason.
Well, well, well.

As further evidence of my overall ignorance, I must ask: How in hell does using HGH help you throw a knuckleball?

Doesn't throwing the knuckler require finesse and technique versus the unnatural brute strength one might get from using HGH?  Wouldn't HGH be more beneficial to a fire-breathing dragon of a fastballer like, say, Roger Clemens?

There's so much I don't know.

HGH can speed up healing; I don't know what's so corrupt about using it for that, but there you go. Wright did rack up DL time last year.

PAPI- (OH YEAH-CAUGHT)...

MANNY- (PROVEN)...

JD- (YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT)...

MOOKIE?- (I HAVE MY DOUBTS, AND WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED ONE BIT).

LBJ....MY BROTHER WAS A COMPETITIVE WEIGHT LIFTER FOR 0VER 30 YEARS AND HE WOULD EXPLAIN TO ME HOW THERE WERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF STEROIDS THAT WOULD AID A PERSON IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE.
STEROIDS THAT DON'T BULK YOU UP, BUT SLOW YOUR HEARTBEAT DOWN ENOUGH TO AID IN CONCENTRATION AND STEADINESS....OTHERS THAT THIN YOU OUT IF YOU DESIRE THAT CUT, "WASHBOARD" LOOK.

HE READ MORE THAN ONE BOOK ABOUT HOW OLYMPIC ATHLETES IN ARCHERY WOULD TAKE THE STEROID TO SLOW DOWN THEIR HEARTBEAT IN ORDER TO STEADY THEIR HAND. (I WAS AMAZED).

I THINK THIS IS WHAT QUITE A FEW BALLPLAYERS ARE TAKING THIS VERY DAY. THE ONE THAT SLOWS THE HEARTBEAT DOWN TO STEADY THE HAND-EYE COORDINATION.

THIS MAKES MORE SENSE TO ME THAN SITTING HERE WONDERING HOW A GUY IS 41 YEARS OLD, OUT OF SHAPE, YET KEEPS BANGING AWAY LIKE GANGBUSTERS.

MORE SENSE THAN WONDERING HOW THIS SMALLISH GUY WHO DOES EVERYTHING FLAWLESSLY ON THE BASEBALL FIELD, ALSO BOWLS 300 GAMES! (BETTS)

I USED TO BOWL...I WAS ON MY HIGH SCHOOL TEAM.. MANY LEAGUES AFTERWARDS...I WAS PRETTY GOOD...CARRIED A 179 AVERAGE. (NEVER REALLY CAME CLOSE TO A 300 GAME...258 WAS MY HIGH GAME).

WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY IS THAT NOBODY IS "THAT" GOOD.....A WORLD CLASS PRO-BASEBALL PLAYER THAT ALSO IS A WORLD CLASS BOWLER THAT AVERAGES WELL OVER 200 AND BOWLS 300 GAMES QUITE FREQUENTLY???

SOUNDS TO ME LIKE SOMEONE HAS ONE STEADY HAND.

JD TOO.... (HEARING HIM ON AN INTERVIEW HOW HE "MADE A HAND ADJUSTMENT" WHICH NOW MAKES HIM A .330 HITTER INSTEAD OF A .290 HITTER)?.... JUST DOESN'T FLY TO ME.

STEADY HANDS, MY FRIENDS, STEADY HANDS.

This makes sense, ALL-CAPS.

I remember that, years ago, Marvin Miller wanted MLB to really research PEDs—try to find out once and for all which were really harmful, which might help, how much they helped performance, etc.

Everybody just accused Miller of wanting to get the players off the hook, which he probably did, but he had a point. It's ridiculous how little we know about all this stuff. Maybe, like many drugs, it would be safe in some doses. Who knows?

Instead, though, what we have now is people like J.D., certainly, getting hold of some make of steroid they don't have a test for yet, and using it until the cows come home.

For all we know, Stanton or other Yankees may be doing the same (If so, Stanton needs better drugs). But I'm sure Martinez is—and so what? By the time he's caught, if he ever is, nobody is going to make the Sox give back their rings.

ALL CAPS, thanks. I asked hoping to get an answer exactly like that.

My only real knowledge of steroid use comes from reading Jose Canseco's book "Juiced". It should come as no surprise that your post above is both more nuanced and more informative on the subject.

Thanks again.

Thank you ALLCAPS, I was also not aware of these differences,,,,,

I remember reading somewhere that steroids can sharpen your vision, quicken reflexes, and improve hand-eye coordination. Pretty much everything you need to raise your batting average forty points or so.

YES, THERE IS SO MUCH THAT THE "POWERS THAT BE" IN BASEBALL EITHER DON'T KNOW OR BETTER YET, DON'T WANT TO KNOW ABOUT STEROIDS.
