Denny Naegle wore 12. But The Great Mariano is said to have been the best overall athlete on the team. He shagged flies and supposedly took BP. Why didn't he have his own helmet? It was the World Series! Did the Yankees not think he needed one? Or were they too cheap to get him one of his own?

Oh. Wait. Yeah. Too cheap.

It was not the World Series, Warbler. It was an inter-league game in 2009, and the guys who wore No. 12 for the Yankees that year were Cody Ransom and Josh Towers, so I suspect it was an unoccupied helmet by then.

What a weird achievement for the amazing, mystical Mr. Mo! I suspect if baseball is played for another 1,000 years—may it be so!—no one will ever get their first RBI in the same game where they get their 500th save.
