If the Yankees sign Nick Johnson, shoot me. Please. Just shoot me.

The a.m. buzz around the Yankiverse is that Cash & the Stein Line are talking about luring Nick Johnson back to his Big Apple roots. You'd think Lerner & Lowe were welcoming back Rex Harrison's electrified cadaver for another stint of "My Fair Lady." No offense to Nick the Sick, but his glory years were as a prospect who was going to win a future batting title.
.
Nick Johnson is living proof that time travel is impossible. Because if it was, or is, some future Yankee fan would have traveled back to 2003 and made the deal when Arizona demanded Nick for Curt Schilling.
.
This is not to poke a batting trophy into Nick Johnson, a good guy. But it's obvious what this Yankee talk is -- and frankly, I'm surprised the sportswriters are letting themselves be used this way.
.
It's like a scene from High School Musical V.
.
The Yankees are pretending to leave the prom with Nick, so Johnny will come running back.
.
But one question. WTF?

Why would they let Hideki Matsui go, because he is a fulltime DH... and then go out and sign a fulltime DH?
.
A left-handed fulltime DH! A left-handed fulltime DH who may be even less durable than Hideki!

Helloooo? Yankiverse? If the Yankees sign Nick, something is seriously wrong with Cashman's ability to handle success. We currently have five CFs and three starting pitchers. That's OK for now, because we're not done.
.
But Nick Johnson? We sign him... and we're more done than we think.

No, this is brilliant. If Jorge, Arod and Jeter are going to get their half days off, we'll need a DH who's hurt a lot.

Cash is obviously going to convert Nick Swisher into a starting pitcher.

Do you have absolutely no foresight whatsoever? There are going to be days when Jeter, A-Rod, Posada, Tex and (hopefully) Damon are going to be in the field. At that point, who do we slide into the DH hole? Melky? Gardiner? Miranda? You need someone there that can hit the ball, which Johnson clearly can do if he's healthy. I agree letting Matsui go was a mistake, but to just leave the DH slot open OR resign Damon and make him the full-time DH while ceding left-field to the adequate (at best) Melky Cabrera is an even bigger mistake.

Nick Johnson isn't a bad spot for this team to pick up on. I wouldn't be disappointed.

Nick is a good choice for DH, but I'd rather see a starter picked up.
