"George Steinbrenner Day?" Are You Nuts?

Some website, apparently suffering from PTSD due to the last post-season, is promoting a petition to hold a GEORGE STEINBRENNER DAY this year in the old park. The fear is that The Great Man will die before he can be publicly frocked and admired.

Hello-o?

This is the equivalent of George W. Bush awarding Donald Rumsfeld the Presidential Medal of Honor.

OK, folks: Reality check. George evolved into a softer-harumphing, almost harmless, cuddly grampa coot. And, yes, he's up there in age. And nobody -- seriously, we don't wish him ill -- nobody wants to see him go. This isn't about him.

Baseball is not supposed to be about billionaires. Got that?

It's players. It's young guys, dumb as rocks, not flinching at a 95-mph fastball. It's Dominican tykes using toxic waste containers for second base, and six-year-old Redsock fans dreaming of finding Jacoby Ellsbury under the Christmas tree.

The owners are not the game. Got that? Unless, of course, we finally jumped into that shithole where it's all money -- in which case, why care how the team does -- we're filling seats, we're turning a profit!

George wrote the checks. God bless him. But he banked a hell of a lot more than he spent.

Want a day? How about JOE TORRE DAY? Ooops, I guess that won't happen in the old stadium, will it? And why? Because somebody at the top couldn't handle a defeat.

Hey, all you bloggers who love Brian Cashman for developing the farm system! Guess who's going to fry if we don't win? And who'll do it?

The guy you want to give a car to.

OK: Compromise offer.

Want to honor George Steinbrenner?

One game this year, ONE GAME, let him put on a uniform and manage the team. Let him pull the pitchers. Let him call the hit and run. One game.

Maybe he'd learning something about the game of baseball. Sadly, I guess it's late in the game for revelations, eh?

Wow! Who knew I could create such dissention amount the It Is High... crowd?

I might be nuts, but George, through all of his hirings and firings, through all of his ranting on the back pages, through all of his misguided attempts, really has only had one goal in mind - fielding a winning team for himself and for us, the fans.

It is for this focus, above lining his pockets, I believe he needs to be honored.

Right on, YankeeGM.

El Duque, quit moving your ratty old post to the top.

It should be up front. I only moved it up so that people could understand what it is that you were attacking me about.

That's right. You were ATTACKING one of your teammates.

How do you think Jorge Posada would feel about that, if I told him?

Lest we forget his contributions to the turtleneck trade. He kept them relevant for another generation.

True, one could make the argument that George is so worried about how the team performs because it directly affects his pocket book, but if George were in it only for the money, then why did he bother investing his money in the first place to buy a baseball team when he could have invested the same ~$8 million he put into the initual buyout into high yield stocks or bonds. The fact of the matter is that George is worth more than $1 billion, so whatever money he makes from owning the yankees at this point is piss in a bucket. He has more than enough money to make sure that his great-great grandchildren don't ever need to work, or even learn to read for that matter. He is in it to win the championships and give himself and the fans (us) the pride and self-respect that comes along with that. If you have a problem with that go fuck a goat.
