Kennedy saga... "Ian, We Hardly Knew Ye'!"

I hate watching young players rise through the Yankee system, only to get dealt. Yeah, it's baseball. But it penalizes the devout fan. You follow them closely -- for what? Every trade brings instant gratification to the weekend fan -- the ones who don't care what's happening in Scranton -- who say, "Wow, we got Curtis Granderson, and we gave up only Phil Coke!"

For that reason, part of me hates this trade.
These guys were future Yankees. Gone.

Granderson is a fine player. Make no mistake. You gotta worry about his inability to hit lefties -- something tells me Detroit worried about it -- but at 28, he's our Reggie Sanders clone for the next four years.

Phil Coke is a serviceable lefty. Austin Jackson will be good, maybe someday even better than Granderson. But not soon.

Alas, that leaves us with Ian Kennedy... the wild card.

No matter what you think about this deal, it's hard to celebrate Kennedy out the door. Yeah, he had critics -- some say he's a fourth starter at best, and in 2008, he didn't know enough to be humble in the clubhouse after being torched in a game.

Still... he's the intangible.

Is he the guy who in 2007 nearly threw a no-hitter, who suffered an enormous life setback and now -- with a year off to ponder the world -- is poised to be the Mike Mussina-clone, as advertised?

Or is he Brad Halsey, Alex Graman, Sean Henn, etc.?

Make no mistake here: How Kennedy does will affect Granderson. Don't believe me? Look at how New Yorkers still judge Eli Manning, due to the price they paid for him and the regular comparisons to Philip Rivers and Ben Rothlesberger. In New York, you're always judged by what the team gave up -- especially if the weekend fans starting recognizing the name.

Three kids... gone. Jeez, it seems like just yesterday they signed. They looked so cute. Sigh. Where did the time go?

Damn rotten lousy stinking shame.

I totally agree with you. The sad part is pitching in the NL West is a joke compared to the AL East. So even if he does good it's not a far comparison.

I agree with you, man. I was at Ian Kennedy's first major league start. I feel like I was just stabbed in the fucking face.

Screw this trade. I can already here the boos after Granderson strikes out for the third time in a row against a lefty in a high leverage situation.

Aren't the Yankees a "win now" team? Isn't this attitude part of what Yankee fans like?

Why all the dewy-eyed sentimentality over the likes of Kennedy and Jackson?

And isn't Kennedy a very RedSoxy name? Shouldn't you be glad to be rid of him before the curse of Ted or somesuch befalls him?

This is easily my favorite article written today about this trade. Fine job sir. My hat is off.

I know what you mean. I like the trade, but I hate giving up pretty much every minor leaguer. I was really looking forward to watching Ajax mature. But I'll probably enjoy watching Granderson.

If Kennedy never becomes a great pitcher this deal works out very well for the Yankees though.

Fuck that. 18-1 redeems him forever.
