Yesterday, in Yankee Stadium, his prayers would have been answered.
That's what we hit: Long, towering flies, again and again, landing about 10 feet shy of making a difference.
The Death Barge stranded more base runners than in any game this season. All we needed were a few singles, or maybe another base on balls. Instead, we supplied a diet of fresh and tasty flies.
Houston's pitchers couldn't throw strikes. Didn't matter. We swung at pitches anyway. YES announcer Jeff Nelson couldn't believe it. Several times, he said the Yankees needed to take pitches, to make them throw strikes. They swung anyway: Flies, master, flies! (And Nelson better watch what he says, or he won't be around long.)
We featured a RF - (RenField?) who cannot run. The previous day, Giancarlo Mendoza jogged the bases and was embarrassingly thrown out at home without even a slide. He did a little dance. (His walk-up tune should be "Do a Little Dance" by KC and the Sunshine Gang.) Yesterday, it didn't matter. He went 0-for-6, his BA sinking towards .200. Flies, master, flies...
Our starting pitcher - Carlos Pavano, signed last winter in a cascade of money - didn't last the third. He gave up five runs, then left with a sniffling hammy. It's the kind of malady the Yankees poo-poo, before sending somebody to the jacuzzi for a month.
Our captain - O, my captain - is hitting below .200 since returning from the torn big toe ligament. It will probably require offseason surgery. They show him on replays: The guy can barely run. And yesterday, his HRs landed at the warning track.
Yesterday, we HAD to beat Houston. And we hit flies.
Let's face it: This team isn't going to win anything. Does ANYBODY see a cause for hope here? I mean, SPEAK, PLEASE, CHANGE MY MIND! They just played arguably the worst game of the season - leaving more runners on base than in any game of 2023 - and the manager says they're "getting better and better."
What planet is he reporting from? He should be smashing water coolers and quoting Jean Paul Sartre and, instead, he's talking about the vagaries of baseball, as if we're discussing the increasingly brown hue of his rectal discharges. I CANNOT TAKE THIS ANY MORE. When Hope Week collides with Shark Week, the Boones of the world get devoured. And all we get are flies.

Well, they would've done well to split this series, and that's what they did. Losing the last game was as predictable as sunrise and sunset. This game for the ASS-stros was -(BB x 12) + 2(3HR) = W. That is, ASS-stros pitching giving up 12 walks plus their hitting 2 three run homers equals win. Earl Weaver must be exploding with laughter in his grave.
When the other team does everything in its power to give you a glorious win and you still can't take it to the bank, that means you're done. In this one, Stanton had a game for the ages with his 0 for 6, and Volpe also contributed with two lousy at bats late in the game. If either one had done anything in their numerous chances, this would've turned out differently.
What you have to like is that Gleyber Torres hit another home run to the opposite field. He's turned his season around nicely.
Aaron Judge has never performed well when he's playing through an injury. He has to be healthy to get it done. He's probably playing at about 75%. The lack of push off with that right toe and consequent lack of proper balance is taking its toll.
As I said before, they only had a 1 in 100 chance of making that last wild card. Now prepare for a total meltdown as they play lesser teams. These guys have not played well against most lousy teams this year. They've only played well against the A's and the Royals. They lost 5 out 6 against the lousy Red Sox. They split against the lousy Mets. They got swept by the lousy Angels.
Hey, at least they didn't let the best player on the other team beat them!

Cause for hope would be Judge being set aside to have his toe surgery NOW, maximizing the time he'll need to recover and get back into playing shape for 2024.

After months of medical review, the crack Yankee medical staff has determined that Judge's toe must be amputated and replaced by a donor toe.
The injured ligament did not repair itself as hoped and instead became septic and had to be removed.
They are now waiting for Donaldson's contract to expire and they will pick up his entire contract for next year if he will donate his toe.
Apparently, we will know by Nov. 1st and the 8 month recovery time will put Judge's return around Wall-Star break 2024.
Luckily, he has agreed to put the "Starr Ins." patch on the left shoulder of everything that he wears in public, so Hal will still make his money.

The Yankees announced a slate of roster moves prior to tonight’s game, most notably designating one-time top pitching prospect Deivi Garcia for assignment and placing lefty Carlos Rodon on the 15-day IL with a strained hamstring. New York also reinstated Jonathan Loaisiga from the 60-day injured list — hence the need for a 40-man spot — and recalled lefty Nick Ramirez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Let's all light candles, burn 🔥 sheep, make golden offerings that Judge doesn't need toe surgery. Even if everything goes well, old man arthritis seems to come in prematurely. Man, I really hope that they don't fuck him up by making the wrong call. It's been too long since they developed not only a talented player, but somebody worth rooting for.

Now, we will pay him 22MIL for 7 seasons and he revert to 2022.
We will also probably sing Torres to 20+ Mil for 7 years and trade Peraza.
We should be able to get season's Lance Lynn for him.
Maybe the Marlins would take Peraza.
Get something for him instead of hugging him to prospect death like Anduhar and Frazier.
