What does the Hughes Code Tell Us?

It’s being reported that next year, Yankee pitcher Phil Hughes will wear #34 -- the ninth Fibonacci number -- switching with its the former inhabitant, Sean Henn.

Were it any other player, the move would be meaningless. But Hughes, a master blogger and mathematician, is known to address his followers in the cryptic language of ancient symbols, some of which include scenes from his favorite TV show, “The Office,” which takes place in Scranton, Pa., where he and Henn have lived.

The pitcher writes in his Internet diary: “3+4=7, my Mom’s favorite number, and 34 was the number of my favorite pitcher growing up, Nolan Ryan."

As Yankeeologists know, this is a typical Hughesian misdirection, designed to obscure the truth.

Hughes is abandoning #65, a drop of 31 digits, (the number of Edwar Ramirez), to obtain a distinctly symbolic Yankeeistic numeral: 3+4=7.... is comprised of 3 (Babe Ruth) and 4 (Lou Gehrig), which added together equals 7 (Mickey Mantle), an obvious reference to the Father, Son and Holy Ghost trinity of formal Yankee orthodoxy.

It resembles the 2+5=Mantle 7 code voiced by Jason Giambi, when he came to the Yankees. But Giambi claimed to be celebrating his Father, the symbolic "WoodMan." Hughes is honoring the Sacred Yankee Maternity figure, the mysterious, so-called "WaldMan."

Moreover, #34 centers the first triple distinct biprime cluster -- 33,34,35 – which amazingly corresponds to ages of Yankee starting pitching over the last seven (3+4=7!) years.

It is the number of the Mets' Mike Pelfrey, who like Hughes, was held onto by a team that thirsted for Johan Santana.

To pull off this transformation, Hughes reportedly will buy Henn dinner, a cost likely to hover around $34. And on the 34th game of the season, May 6, Hughes is expected to be facing the Cleveland Indians, the team that knocked us from the playoffs last year, then lost in 7 (3+4) games to a team led by David Ortiz.... you guessed it... number 34.
