In a stunning interview yesterday, Redsock Designated Eater David 'Big Popout' Ortiz sat down with Gammons Globe scribe Nick Cafardo (both pictured in photo on right; Cafardo front, Ortiz in rear) and had a lengthy discussion about steroids, testing, A-Rod and penalties.
A sample from the read:
"I think that the A-Rod situation, it was a little bit tough for the game," Ortiz said... "It was one thing that he said that caught my attention was that he was young and at the time. . . . sometimes you make the wrong decision like he did."
Let me get this straight.
Isn't David Ortiz that bench player the Socks picked up off the scrap heap after the... gulp... Twins dropped him back in 2003?
The Twins? If they had Melky Cabrera, they'd play him every day in center!?! And they dropped David Ortiz. You know why?
2000 - 130 games - .282 AVG - 10 HR - 63 RBI - .446 SLG
2001 - 89 games - .234 AVG - 18 HR - 48 RBI - .475 SLG
2002 - 125 games - .272 AVG - 20 HR - 75 RBI - .500 SLG
(discovered under a bridge in Boston by Theo Epstein)
2003 - 128 games - .288 AVG - 31 HR - 101 RBI - .592 SLG
2004 - 150 games - .301 AVG - 41 HR - 139 RBI - .603 SLG
2005 - 159 games - .301 AVG - 48 HR - 148 RBI - .613 SLG
2006 - 151 games - .287 AVG - 54 HR - 137 RBI - .636 SLG
2007 - 149 games - .332 AVG - 35 HR - 117 RBI - .621 SLG
2008 - 109 games - .264 AVG - 23 HR - 89 RBI - .507 SLG
Anyone see a trend here? And this guy is offering opinions about PED and hot pee penalties?
Ohhh yeah, I know, I know, Sock fans. Its the park, right? That Homeless People Center you call a ballpark is soooooo much smaller than the Metrodome out in Minny, right?
Metrodome: LF 343, CF 408, RF 327
Fenway: LF 310, CF 420, RF 302
I guess that spike from hitting 10, 18 and 20 HR for the Twins to hitting 41, 48, 54 and 35 for the Socks was all a bi-product of having a fence (because he's a straightaway and pull hitter, he CAN'T hit to the opposite field for power on a consistent basis) 25 feet closer, huh?
Especially when the It Is High Crack Investigative Team uncovered this photo of 'Big Popout' from his rookie days:
