This morning, Rush Madden bellows out for the Yankees to "ditch" Alex Rodriguez in a column seemingly typed by the electrified corpse of Dick Young, the Daily News gasbag who 32 years ago ran Tom Seaver out of town.
It's a thing with sportswriters. Don't know why. I've seen many up close, and some are close friends, rock solid. But now and then, they go crazy -- I think it's pent up frustration from the shit they eat every day -- and they want a head on their mantle, rather than another AP second place writing award.
In Young's case, in 1977, he savaged Seaver because the pitcher sought to renegotiate his contract with the Mets. He even attacked Seaver's family in print. Six years later, Young ditched the Daily News and skipped to the Post for more money. To my knowledge, he ever commented publicly on the hypocrisy of his actions.
Madden is not Dick Young. But today, he sure is channeling him. And he's got the online Yankiverse, a fun house of smoke and mirrors far more confusing than anything ever devised, to echo his chorus.
Ditch Arod...
Sure would feel good. And what of the other 103 players who ruled positive but didn't get named? Is there a plan for them?
Hate to act like a designated driver at the drunken lynch party, especially when it's Arod. And who wants to quell a controversy:
Since Torre's book came out, this site visits have jumped by at least 20 percent. I assume every other Yankee site's traffic has shot up, too.
But this is what's known as burning out. Can we take a break? And how about letting Dick Young stay buried.
