What gives? Yesterday, as they were partying like seals, the Cubs signed a Yankee cast-off

From the Department of Goes Without Saying: The World Series winner always sets the gold standard. Right? And the Cubs enjoy one of the deepest systems in baseball. Uh-huh?

So... will somebody please splain to me why yesterday, after Bill Murray finished dousing him with champagne, Theo Epstein went into the office and signed Connor Mullee - a 28-year-old Yankee roster reject - off the waiver wire. Hm-mm. What's going on here?

Let's face it: The Cubs know talent. They've built - for now, anyway - the best organization in baseball. And yesterday, they pounced on Mullee, an injury-prone RH relief pitcher who threw only three innings last year for the Yankees. This wasn't the San Diego Padres popping in to grab Danny Tartabull's nephew, Zeek. This is the Cubs.

So... WTF? Did the Cubs just steal a potential diamond? Or - and this is Hope speaking - are the Yankees so deep in roster talent that their rejects are coveted by top teams? Clearly, the Yankees will lose players next month's Rule 5 draft. (Last year, we lost Jake Cave, though the Reds returned him later.) We have too many to protect. (It was said that's why we traded Ben Gamel; they weren't going to be able to protect him.)

I'm HOPING to think the Yankees are stocked, STOCKED, and this is a sign of an organization bursting with potential. Still... hm-mm. It's known that Brian Cashman and Theo Epstein have a good working relationship. The Epster gave up a lot for Aroldis Chapman in August - Glyber Torres is now our No. 1 prospect - for only a half-season of El Chapo. Did Epstein scrutinize the Yankee system, and thus be aware of Mullee, when he went unprotected? Did Cash and Theo maybe discuss Mullee, who - when healthy - has been successful? Either way, the Cubs pounced on an ex-Yank that the "serious" blogs never much mentioned. They went into our trash and pulled out a cast-off pair of shoes. Next spring, who knows, maybe they'll put them on.

Okay by me. I'm already liking 2017.

ME TOO....LOVING 2017 ALREADY!...... AND DON'T FORGET, JEURY'S FAMILIA WILL BE GONE FOR AT LEAST 50 GAMES, AND IF THEY LET CESPEDES WALK, IT WILL BE GOODBYE METSIES IN 2017............. I THINK THE KEY TO US CONTENDING BIG TIME NEXT SEASON IS.......PLUCKING EDWIN ENCARNACION FROM THE RED SOX GRASP,(REMEMBER, WE DON'T HIT-BUT THE IMPROVEMENT MIGHT BE NIGHT AND DAY WITH EE, BIRD, SANCHEZ AND JUDGE A FULL SEASON),- AND GETTING CHAPMAN OR JANSEN TO CLOSE... PONY UP NOW HAL!....AND MAYBE CASH CAN MAKE A TRADE FOR A DECENT STARTER......DONE.

I wouldn't forecast your admiration for 2017 until, gasp, after the election.

This Epstein snatch of a Yankee nobody is worrisome if only because Cashman has a F grade in evaluating talent. I think Theo undressed Brian in the trade for Chapman, and left Brian thinking he had negotiated a positive outcome for the Yankees. A perfect con. The loser thinks he is a winner and never complains. By the time he figures it out, he is too embarrassed to speak up.

I see nothing but 4th place in 2017, and very little use of our " top prospects," either because they suck or because Girardi won't play them.

Maybe I'll be more optimistic after the election.

Or back managing in the South Mexico dirt field league.
