So it comes down to this? Gio Gonzalez? Ervin Santana?

Supposedly, the Yankees may have one last one last card to play this winter. They'll buy a cheap veteran starter in the February flea market. It might be 36-year-old Ervin Santana. Or Gio Gonzalez, who is only 33.

It will be an exciting day for the Yankees, proof again that everyone plays for us, eventually.

I remember when a young, rawboned Santana - pitching for the Angels - shut us down in the playoffs. When was that, 1973? Last year, Ervin went 0-1 with an 8.03 ERA for Minnesota. He pitched in five games. That ought to get him a big contract. As for Gonzalez, wasn't he always on the list of young "power arms" coveted by Coopertown Cashman? Last year, he went 10-11 with a 4.21 ERA for two NL teams. It's a wonder we're not trading our farm system for him.

Either could soon become a Yankee.

Insert sigh here.

For two years, they told us why the Yankees desperately needed to cut payroll: It was a long term plan. The free agent class of 2018-19 would feature some of the greatest talents in a generation, and the  Yankees wanted to be players. Thus, the franchise sat on its wallet last year, while Boston outspent us by $40 million en route to a world championship.

Now this: We are turning over couch cushions to fund an Ervin Santana. (Note: Wade Miley was also part of this three-pronged free agent perp-walk, but he signed with the Astros last night.)

I know, I know... this gets tiresome, having me repeat myself again and again. But as the Yankees rake in more dough than ever before in history, they are using their iconic status to simply enrich themselves further, rather than win.

Ervin Santana? Gio Gonzalez? Ervin Gonzalez? Fukkit. I hope we do nothing. I'd rather take my chances with Chance Adams.

You know, it's actually quite strange... how disappointing and infuriating this winter has become. It's not as if we haven't picked up a few important players - Zach Britton and JA Happ, for example. But it's what we haven't done - used our financial advantage - that exposes the naked greed of our owner. The father wanted to win at all costs. The son just sees the costs.

But I'm serious about not wanting either of these chumps. If the Yankees sign Santana, it won't matter how awful he looks in spring training. They will look at his $5 million price tag and pencil him in as the sixth starter, where he will sit through May, until the bombings take their toll or his shoulder barks. You can forget about Adams or Jonathan Loaisiga, or anybody who happens to throw hard in Tampa: They'll all go straight to Scranton and disappear. The Yankees will look at the money they're paying the veterans and want to get good value. It's the way of all Yankee down periods, and - folks - we are in one now.

They should sign both of them. Then the 5th spot in every rotation could be: Gio, 2 innings; Santana, 2 innings; CC Sabathia, 2 innings; bullpen, 3 innings.

Guaranteed wins every time the 5th spot comes up. Cheap price for the 3 starters put together. Endless second-guessing of Larry R and Lorna Boone.

Of course, this plan would mean using 2 more roster spots for pitchers. Obviously, part of the plan must be to have Scotty beam Ellsbury up to the Enterprise!

THIS IS SUCH A PINPOINT POST BY MR. DUQUE.....

WASTING MONEY ON "THE VETERANS", AS WE SCRAP OUR OWN PROSPECT ARMS.

EVEN THOUGH OUR FARM SYSTEM HAS BEEN DECIMATED BY COOP'S DEALINGS, WE STILL POSSESS SOME REAL GOOD ARMS ON THE FARM.

JOHNNY LASAGNA, DOMINGO ACEVEDO, DOMINGO GERMAN, DEIVI GARCIA, MICHAEL KING, LUIS MEDINA, AND OTHERS NOT LISTED, ALL HAVE REAL TALENT.

....BUT OUR "VISION-LESS" GM WON'T EVER GIVE ANY OF THEM HOPE TO BE A "RISE TO THE TOP" ROOKIE IN SPRING TRAINING.

COOP IS KILLING US.

HAL DOESN'T HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE TO REALIZE IT.

HAL NEEDS DIRECTIONS TO THIS SITE.

Those two big signings? Happ and Britton. how do they enhance our chance for winning? they were on the team last year. This is jogging in place, so pardon my enthusiasm.

Hal and Cashman have the same dynamic as Dolan and Glenn Sather.

Dolan is a drunken fool and Sather conned him into thinking he was some hockey genius because he was so fortunate to be a new coach with Edmonton when their scouting staff drafted players such as Gretzky, Messier, Coffey, Kurri, Fuhr among others.

It's the same on the Knicks side. All those genius GMs like Laydon, Thomas and Phil Jackson did nothing except garner big paychecks for themselves from that moron while accomplishing zero. Like Sather, Jackson was a "zen master" and "coaching guru" only because he was lucky enough to have coached some of the best players in the NBA. I guess when you draft shitty players as GM you lose your super powers as quickly as Superman does in front of a piece of green kryptonite.

Hopefully, Cashman remembers that by late June, Jordan Montgomery will be able to pitch again. Like everyone else, I'd rather see Adams or Loaisiga before any of the dead-armed pitchers Cashman is lusting after.

Spot on, Duque! This is worse than useless. I would rather have taken my chances with guys like Sheffield.

Joe FOB, I love "Lorna Doone"!

And Carl Weitz, I agree: Action Jackson may or may not have been a good coach—obviously, he did no harm to those Bulls and Lakers teams, which in coaching as in doctoring is the first prerequisite—but how does that make him a good GM?

It was idiotic.

The old Yankees—choose almost any era—used to be all about winning, and their detractors said they were all about the money. Now they really are all about the money—and this year, I predict, the winning will stop.

Right Horace....and the reverse was true about what people thought of one of the most successful Yankee managers. When he managed bad Met and Cardinal teams, he was "Clueless" Joe Torre. But once he had a once-in-a-lifetime, dynastic lineup he suddenly became a knowledgeable, patient manager who was master of ego stroking and personnel navigation.

I think we need to start trying some of our outfielders on the mound.

Maybe Red Thunder has a sinker. Can Gardy bend it into the dirt? How about Hicks holding guys on first?

Why do I feel this season is already over?

Why do I have dreams of Stanton striking out with the bases loaded in the ninth?

Why do I see our best rookie eating pumpkin seeds while we lose to Boston because no one on the Yankees can drive in a run?

Why do I see Neal Walker doing post game interviews?

Why do I envision a pie made of crows?

Why does Brian Cashman still have a job ?

Remember this guy? (From MLB trade rumors.)

... (Ian) Clarkin, he’s a former first-round pick (No. 33 by the Yankees in 2013) that has bounced back and forth via waivers between the Cubs and White Sox on multiple occasions this winter. Clarkin was hit hard in 68 innings of Double-A ball last year, turning in a 4.98 ERA with nearly as many walks (4.1 BB/9) as strikeouts (4.6 K/9), and he’ll now stick with his new organization and likely head to Major League Spring Training as a non-roster invitee. "

and this guy... (Same source)

Banuelos, 27, has long been considered a promising talent but has only briefly seen MLB time. He spent all of the 2018 campaign working at the Dodgers’ Triple-A club, where he split his time between the rotation and the bullpen.

All told,(Manny)Banuelos threw 108 2/3 innings last year, carrying a 3.73 ERA with 10.5 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9. He could be an interesting candidate for a multi-inning role and figures to enter Spring Training with a chance at cracking the Chicago pen. The organization had to place him on the 40-man roster to keep him from minor-league free agency.

and James Kaprielian? Hasn't pitched yet.

Crap shoot eh?

Can Gardy bend it into the dirt?

If he could, you would mark it on your scorecard as "Passed Ball, Sanchez".
