I would have had him take another couple steps. BUT...apparently IKF did what his coach wanted him to, and as a number of people have pointed out, only Rojas slipping and falling on that play made it close (and probably prevented a 4-2-3 DP).
I agree with Hammer that a bigger strategy mistake—as I said at the time—was bunting Vladdie Jr. over to third. I would have preferred taking another shot at a single. But who knows if that would have happened?
And as Hammer pointed out, how the hell can your closer give up a home run to Rojas, a 36-year-old utility player who has hit all of 57 in 12 seasons? You've got to be pouring the fastballs in there.
Still, you gotta give the Bums credit: first NL team to win back-to-back Series in almost 50 years. And considering how the BoSox got robbed by the umps in that one, the first legitimate, back-to-back NL World Series winners since the New York Baseball Giants, against our boys, in 1921-1922.
Also, are the "Power Rankings" now determined by predicted net income? Otherwise, there is no way in hell your New York Yankees should rank above about 10th, in all of "MLB." (Incidentally, JM, making the ALCS in 2026 would be an IMPROVEMENT over this season. Sigh.)
I get confused by the names of all the postseason levels of play. But yes, of course, we didn't make it that far this year. I forgot the entire Seattle series, or blocked it out.
Hey, maybe Seattle can beat us in the postseason next year.
I watched the IKF play again on youtube. Seeing the whole infield at the same time, IKF was barely a step or step and a half off 3B. Then, whilst the pitch was made, he took ZERO secondary lead. So he had to run at least 82-84 feet to beat the throw.
Even so, he still would've beat the throw IF HE HADN'T SLID. The stoopid bastard has to slow down the last couple of steps in order to slide over the plate. Replay showed that Will Smith's foot was off the plate when he made the catch, then Smith's foot went back to touch the plate, when IKF's foot was barely ONE FUCKING INCH AWAY FROM THE PLATE. So ultimately, IKF was out by one fucking inch. If he had just run straight through, his foot easily beats Will Smith's foot to the plate.
This World Series came ultra close to ending on a challenge replay review. Something John Sterling was always afeared of. If fucking IKF hadn't slid but just run straight through, the umpire's call, even if he had called him out, would've been overturned on replay, and the Blow Jobs would've won.
Shades of something like the movie "Slapshot". The ultimate fucked up championship win-on-a-shoulder shrug.

Ref to Orgie Oglethorpe: "That's it ... you lose!"
Ref to Charlestown Chiefs: "Come and pick up your trophy, you bum!"
Ballplayers are so stoopide. Nobody is ever going to mistake a baseball player for Albert Einstein. Ask any ballplayer, they'll tell you that sliding is faster than running straight through a base, especially sliding headfirst. If that were true, every Olympic 100 meter sprinter would be diving for the finish line. No, it's not true. Sliding only slows you down. When you're sprinting at your fastest speed, you have to adjust your mechanics in order to start going into a slide. That really kills your time. Probably wastes at least a half second. That's time that you'll be flying almost ten feet if you're running straight through.
So on bases loaded and ball hit on the ground, the runner from 3B should be running straight through home plate, not sliding.
Not only does the runner have to slow down in order to start his slide technique, but during his slide, he typically hits the ground, starts "to stick" and he gets slowed down. Running straight through eliminates all those problems. In fact, at a distance of only 80-85 feet, you should still be accelerating. Olympic sprinters don't get to full acceleration until something like two thirds, maybe three quarters of the way through the 100 meter dash. (100 meters is a bit more than 300 feet.)
If I was Fat Dracula, I would've drained IKF of his blood after that loss.
'Course, I'm sure Fat Dracula is too stoopid to know all this. But maybe he realizes that fucking IKF took too small a lead and zero secondary lead. IKF was in to run for a guy with a broken leg. Too fucking bad that IKF was no faster than the guy with the broken leg.
Are the fucking Artful Dodgers going to send fucking IKF a Christmas present this winter? Because fucking IKF was the real fucking MVP of the series (FOR THE FUCKING ARTFUL DODGERS).
Why should we break our backs Stupidly paying tax? Better get some untaxed income Better to pick-a-pocket or two. You've got to pick-a-pocket or two, boys You've got to pick-a-pocket or two.

I don't doubt you, Hammer. But what about diving? Do you think it has the same effect? If IKF had just thrown himself forward, would he have got there slightly faster?
Again, though: hard to blame IKF if the coach was telling him to stay put. I do think the coach was overly worried about the line-drive-to-the-third-baseman DP. And it still seemed to me that IKF could have taken another step or two toward home.
Hoss, after watching it on youtube, that was all on IKF. He should've crossed the plate on the run. Diving forward might've been slightly faster than sliding feet first. But only if it was done perfectly. Running straight through beats any kind of slide, headfirst dive or feet first. He wasted a precious half second. In terms of distance, he probably lost at least a good 5 feet. He beats the throw if he just runs straight through.
And yes, he should've taken a secondary lead with the pitch. That's a baseball fundamental. You don't take any secondary lead, you won't make it unless the infielder bobbles the ball or makes a poor throw. Here, the infielder did indeed bobble and double clutch. IKF has got to score on that.
I know it might be hard to believe, but watching track & field sprinters will prove it. Every second, on a full run, they're covering a tremendous distance when they're at full speed. Diving or sliding wastes a lot of time. Should only be done when sliding is necessary to avoid a tag or when going into second or third base, when you're have to be on the bag to avoid being tagged out.
That's why they tell players to run through 1st base when trying to beat out an infield hit. Sometimes, sliding is necessary to avoid a collision or a tag, like when the fielder jumps for a high throw. But it's always faster to run through the bag.
I was shocked when IKF was out. When I saw the bobble by the fielder, loss of balance, then emergency throw, I thought for sure IKF was going to score. Fucking Little Red Riding Hood dilly dallying through the forest.
