The Yanks have signed Sergio Mitre, who underwent Tommy John ligament replacement surgery last July, to boost that huge fan base that is already thinking about spring 2010!
The signing bolsters the team's rather thin rehab ward, ever since Andrew Brackman, Humberto Sanchez, Mark Melancon and Christian Garcia returned -- at least, temporarily -- to pitching.
With a little luck, Mitre could be back throwing at full strength around this time next year.
"By signing Sergio, the Yankees have reclaimed the lead in surgically repaired tendons, ligaments and other forms of soft tissue that are never discussed by Joe Girardi," a team spokesman said. "As every Yankee fan knows, it's critical to always have some high-priced former arm out there, Zambrano-ing in a dirt league and keeping hopes high for a one-in-a-million return to form. Nobody wants to jinx Sergio, but he could be our next Octavio Dotel."
