Yankees claim a guy waived by Miami; 10 fun facts about 3B Jordan Groshans

1. It's pronounced GROW-shins.

2. At 6'3", he'll at least look good coming off the bus.

3. He has options to spare, so he'll probably play the year in Scranton.

4. Shades of Red Thunder, another former first-round pick.

5. At one point he was ranked #3 prospect in the Blue Jays farm system.

6. Three times, he made Baseball America's Top 100 rankings. (Last was early 2021 - he was #34.)

7. Last year in Triple A, he flopped, hitting .243 with only six HRs over 528 plate appearances.

8. But he's only 24.

9. He is a career .271 hitter in the minors, though no power.

10. In his pro career, he's been intentionally walked once.

Bonus: He has played 3B, 1B, SS, 2B and RF.

Double Bonus: To obtain Groshans, the Yankees waived LH reliever Matt Krook, a prospect who is 29. And so it goes.

We are no longer Krook-ed.

And sure, why spend money on a guy like Gio when you can get waiver chum for basically nothing?

Another genius move by Brain. "I'm shakin' the bush, boss! I'm still shakin' it!"

Whether it's Jordan Groshans or Josh Groban does it matter, he'll be waived in 2 weeks

Waive bye-bye.

Sorry.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic sez:

"The Yankees, Angels, Giants, Red Sox, Cubs, Phillies and Mariners have all been linked to Snell at points during the offseason, but he’s still unsigned as spring training gets underway. I think the Yankees ultimately land him — especially after the Orioles traded for Corbin Burnes, removing him as an option — unless they’re able to make a trade with the White Sox for Dylan Cease instead."

I think I'd rather have Cease. Monty still duking it out with the Rangers over dough. Bellinger still not signed by the Cubs. The guy is only 28, we should get him and trade Verdugo, as has been said here repeatedly. But nobody listens to us. We're just old amateurs, not eggheaded statboys or GM geniuses.

Yes, but what's the addition do to improve our Quatlooms!?!?! It's all quatlooms nowadays, what do you need a refresher course...

I don’t see the team making any other major moves due to the salary cap tax penalties. They probably will continue to be very active with the guys at the end of the 40 man, as they pan for a gold nugget amidst other org’s effluvia.

We have to get our spelling down before the season starts:

A quatloo was a monetary unit on the planet Triskelion which was used by the planet's Providers to bet on thrall competitions.

This is, perhaps, the strangest part of the Yankees' insanity: always thinking they can "turn around" some big prospect who flamed out. Have they ever done this?

Darryl Strawberry probably doesn't count. Or Steve Howe. It's a good question, Hoss. Generously, I'd say Cash doesn't think any of these prospect flameouts are true candidates for turnaround impact. At best, they are injury insurance who have at least one plus tool (the prospect status didn't come from nowhere), and maybe they get hott-ish for a couple weeks until Stanton returns and/or the league figures them out.

Quatloo is correct.

You ommitted, a typical Genius Cashman pickup.

As much as I hate praising cashman for anything, as a waiver claim this is worth it. He was actually a fair, B-level prospect until last year. Biggest red flag is a long injury history.. He’ll go straight to Scranton and will need to prove himself there. Certainly, let’s temper our expectations, but this is a no risk move, we will see about the upside…

The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired LHP Clayton Andrews from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for RHP Joshua Quezada.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have placed RHP Scott Effross on the 60-day injured list.

In 3.1 innings, the 27-year-old Andrews pitched to a 27.00 ERA, allowing 10 earned runs on 10 hits, including three home runs. The lefty struck out four and walked two in his brief tenure in the majors. (Courtesy SNY)

As ok as signing Groshans was, this one makes no sense,

Whoever had Efftoss in the First Injured pool, come on down and claim your prize.

Also Lou Trivino was spotted in camp, sniffing for a job.

Strange move for Brian - I know he likes to collect former top prospects, but not until they're on the wrong side of thirty. No doubt Groshans stays in Scranton unless he can up his strikeout rate to the organisation's high expectations. Last year in AAA he struck out in a paltry 17.4% of his plate appearances, and actually got on base more than one third of the time. So the Yankee hitting coaches will have their work cut out for them...

But hey - young player, has shown promise, doesn't cost much - a fine low-risk move.

If Brian would just restrict himself to dumpster diving and let someone else handle trades, free agent negotiations, roster management, player development, and strategy, he'd be a pretty good assistant GM. Each season I look forward to the moment when most of his starters are injured, he has no prospects or payroll flexibility to trade for other teams' failures, and he is forced to let the kids and scrubs play. The C team is always much more entertaining than the A team, and usually plays better.
