Not the worst trade ever. We still have too many LH outfielders. We received two middling prospects, and I guess you can never have too many. Still, I think Ben Gamel will have a nice MLB career, and it sucks that he never even got a cup of coffee with us.
At every singular point, you can see why the Yankees did what they did. You can understand why he didn't get a shot. Gardy and Ellsbury had to play. Beltran was in right. Aaron Hicks was the golden boy. We have Mason Williams and Jake Cave, and we had Slade Heathcott, until we cut him - all lefiy hitters. Still, it plays to the frustrations of the 2016 Yankees - here's the International League Player of the Year, a season after being the IL Rookie of the Year - and even though our hitters were doing nothing all the season, we couldn't even find a place for the guy.
And then, a day after we do trade him, Aaron Hicks tweaks a gonad, and Aaron Judge goes into strikeout hibernation.

Ben Gamel is batting .138.
All of his hits have been singles.
Young does not necessarily = good.
The Mariners have been looking for athletic corner outfielders for what seems decades. Gamel so far looks like another in a long line of good field, no hit prospects. He'll get a shot here only as long as he produces at the plate or someone with more upside comes along. Check back in five years to see if either of the young righties the Yankees got ever amounts to anything.
Thanks joe de pastry, aspiring CEO of Small Sample Size Inc. Check out Willie Mays's and Mickey Mantle's MLB debuts and then hit the reset button.
Has anyone considered that part of the reason for the Yankees' surge was the long-overdue disappearance of Cashman dogmeat acquisition Aaron Hicks, inexplicably given 320 plate appearances to prove what every other MLB GM already knew--that he sucks? If he had been released at mid-season--as any other rationally run team would have done--and replaced with Gamel or Austin or Judge--the Yankees might be leading the division by now instead of struggling to secure a one-game playoff.
That point from Anon about Hicks is stunning. I had not realized that 300+ PAs were involved.
Sometimes, you really gotta wonder...
GOTTA AGREE WITH YA anonymous...... "DOGMEAT" HICKS SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED WITH GAMEL, AUSTIN, OR JUDGE AT LEAST 120 AT BATS AGO.....
Dogmeat Cashman should be designated for assignment, as he doesn't understand baseball teams, and how and why they are successful. Cashman ordered Girardi to play Hicks every day, and all it proved is that it was a horrible decision. Similar to Dustin Ackley, whose agent owns Cashman..
Bear in mind that Ackley, Hicks and Castro were viewed by Cashman as valuable additions that would strengthen our already awesome, almost league leading 2015 offense. Seriously. That's what he said. These three were going to put our fearsome lineup over the top.
Everyone here knows that scoring the second-most number of runs last year was a prime example of a statistic in search of any practical meaning.
On the other hand, at least Castro has worked out pretty well.
In defense of Joe de Pastry, Gamel is doing worse than Judge, and that takes some doing. He might be fine, and I'd rather have him and find out than sending him to Seattle for them to find out, but at least for this season, carrying one sub-.200 rookie is pretty much the limit.
