WORLD GOING TO HELL

This just in from Brian Stelter's CNN media newsletter:

Just announced: The NY Daily News is putting up a pay wall on Feb. 1... Readers will have access to 10 free articles a month before the wall goes up... (NYDN)
Who in their right mind would pay this? Will the limit apply to photos? Is this the end of Duque's Tabloid Covers Race?

The brawl must have started due to the old demon, rum. I have always mentioned that drinking is evil.

Hee. Heee.

But Hank Bauer was not one to trifle with.

Or so I'm told.

But who is the other guy?

January is a really slow baseball month.

The other guy is probably one of the members of the bowling team who the Yanks clocked. They later sued Bauer.

The brawl started because the bowlers were heckling Sammy Davis, Jr., with racial epithets. Of course, our Yankees, being on the side of right and good as always, rushed to deep-six the racist bastards.

And yes, the Daily News is crazy to put up a payroll. How will I ever get by without reading their columnists spread new, false trade rumors every week?

I have mixed feelings about the pay wall.

I have a lot of friends who are in journalism and the layoffs have been brutal. We need newspapers more than ever and if this is a way to increase revenue and get paid for what they produce, and which I use, I totally understand it.

The schnorrer in me... the guy who lives in California but reads the sports section of the News and the Post every AM while drinking coffee and will now either have to pay for the privilege or be content with RAB, Big Blue View (NY Giants) and "It is High" with the occasional stop at theknicksblog.com around the time of the draft... will not be happy.

I get it. I already pay for MLB.TV so I can watch the Yankees so why not this? Besides if I don't, how will I know when Mike Lupica's parent's anniversary is?

You could charge readers to read your gibberish to cover the cost of reading and ripping off the Daily News' gibberish. And didn't Schilling bilk Rhode Island, not New Hampshire, or did he bilk all of New England?

You're right, B.G., it was Rhode Island.

And Anonymous, I largely agree. People don't write for free, and newspapers need to stay in business.

I would think they could find others ways to do it online, like selling ads or mining data.

But for me, it's not the principle I'm turned off by, but the product.

Craving, needing, aching for baseball, I was willing to stop by and see their latest, silly rumors regarding Gerrit Cole, or Todd Frazier. But as we know, most of what they write is made-up nonsense, sitting on their asses back in the office.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for sitting on my ass in the office, making up drivel. But damned if I'm going to pay cash money to read drivel I can dribble at home!!

We do need a free press.

And we should pay to get it.

Enough said.
