Baseball tie-in: I read an article that Fred Willard's character and lines were based on the job Joe Garagiola did as host of a Westminster Kennel Club broadcast. When Garagiola was told this, he completely missed the parody, took it literally, and replied, "That's ridiculous. I never asked anyone how much I could bench press."

Fred doing Joe reminds me that a lot of Airplane! was lifted word for word from Zero Hour!

Fred in BEST IN SHOW:
Doctor, question that's always bothered me and a lot of people: Mayflower, combined with Philadelphia - a no-brainer, right? Cause this is where the Mayflower landed. Not so. It turns out Columbus actually set foot somewhere down in the West Indies. Little known fact.
Back when movies had a predictable release schedule transitioning from theaters, to airplanes, to cable, to DVD, to rentals, I was flying once a week to Seattle (from Rhode Island).
Best In Show was the featured movie on the East to West route but it was too early in the morning (6am) for me to want to watch a comedy. I.e., there is very little that's funny at 6am. This happened for several weeks running.
On one Monday morning flight, the guy sitting behind me was watching B-I-S and he was dying laughing. I could tell somehow from his laugh and his involuntary comments that he was fairly intelligent. He would say things like "Oh. God. No. NO. No. No." through the setup of some joke and then he'd explode laughing at the payoff. This happened over and over. I made a mental note to watch the movie on the next flight.
Getting a preview of the laughs to be had very much enhanced my viewing experience and I have a fond memory of the stranger behind me.
They're all good but Best In Show is my favorite of that ensemble's offerings.
I liked Phyllis George but I loved Fred Willard. Since a few of us in the dorm were big Mary Hartman fans, we segued right into Fernwood 2Night, and it was even better.
That will always be my favorite Fred. As great as he was in everything else, that's the first time I remember seeing him and laughing my ass off. He and Mull were a great duo, too.
Yeah, I think you're right, LBJ, that "Best In Show" is the best of the bunch.
I love all the folk song parodies in "Might Wind," though, such as the song, "Never Did No Ramlin'" and Ramblin' Jake Pitkin.
Nary Hartman (Louise Lasser, Louise Lasser) had vocal cord surgery at a hospital I worked at in the 80's. She was just as nuts (in a sorta good way, but definitely out there) in person as on Mary Hartman.
Forgot that she was in that other art film - Frankenhooker.

I’d never heard of the Phyllis George lady until she was dead. Ignored it until this blog compared her to Suzyn, so I read the obit. I know Suzyn Waldman, Suzyn Waldman is a friend of mine (and all...). Phyllis George is no Suzyn Waldman. To accomplish what Suzyn has accomplished, with that face, and that voice... only John Sterling could possibly over shadow Suzyn Waldman’s brilliant sports career.
