As long as we're predicting...

Not to step on the annual predict the number of wins contest but there's only one more day to do this.

What number will Volpe choose and why?

He is currently wearing #77 and I read that Mickey Mantle was his grandfather's favorite player.

When he was interviewed yesterday on YES he didn't sound high on it. Plus, the number has been sullied by megabust Clint Jackson Frazier all too recently.

I have my own prediction but I'll post it in the comments later.

How about 62? It’s a common retirement age and the media seems ready to retire his number already

As for home run call, I’m still coming up with them. Volpe is in the henhouse. Volpe Italian for Fox.

If Volpe decides NOT to wear 77 my guess is he will go with either 14 or 70.

4.7. Or 655.

Left this comment at the end of another thread. I apologize if you’ve already seen it.

Volpe HR call, sung to the tune of “Volare”:

“Voh-OHL-pay, oh, oh,
Go-OHL-pay, oh, oh, oh, oh … “

I think “golpe” means “hit” in Italian.

That's a good one, Ajax. I think the Master could just do the first line of the song and leave it at that.

In case anyone is wondering, Danish is getting tagged again today. Where did this guy come from? And why is he still on the team?

He's just been replaced with Ian Hamilton. Any relation to Steve? Is there a Folly Floater in his arsenal?

"Volpe vidi vici"

Or: "Veni vidi volpe."

Though I think that's been used before, I forget for who.

I'm going to go with #11

The lowest number available. Not sure if he has the ego to pick it though.

That Ted Danish guy is really pissing me off now. Get him outta here already

I think Judge has removed any stigma for high numbers. I think most of us remember when they were "Spring Training" numbers only. Like Doug I thought of 11, but maybe the team wants to retire it for Brett Gardner. 12 is the perfect INF #, but IKF is hanging on to it like grim death. I guess it'll be 77; hope it doesn't have red hair all over it.

Thanks, JM.

I was going for a rhyme a la “Giancarlo … stoparlo”

The Yankees look like a .500 team because of the Cashman/Boone cognitive deficit. They simply won't/can't put the best players on the field: old guys who were good three to seven tears ago get first consideration. Superior younger players are submerged, demoralized, and ruined. Cashman/Boone/Hal are co-enablers of one another's stupidity. The team got off to a freakish strong start last year and then receded into mediocrity. Nothing freakish this year: mediocrity and stupidity from here to October and beyond.

If I were Volpe, I think I'd ask for 71. Makes sense, doesn't it? Just tacking on a 1 to Mantle's 7. I wouldn't want 77 after the Clint Frazier debacle.

The Jimi Hendrix song Foxy Lady.

It is high, it is far, it is gone! You've got to be all mine, all mine. Foxy Volpe!

@EDB, Yeah, the only plausible explanation for this seeming stupidity is that they don't give a rat's ass about winning a championship. They like just barely making the postseason and then getting booted out in the first round. They cash in their chips, tell the media that the playoffs are a crapshoot, and laugh all the way to the bank.

Similar to any of the other franchise owners that don't really give a crap, Kansas City, Chicago Cubs. KC is happy to win one every quarter century. Cubs happy to win once per century. New York Yankees are the same thing now but on a much higher scale, with more profits, bigger payroll, top franchise value. But exactly the same crap results.

When will the Yankees win again? I don't know if it'll happen during our lifetimes. At the current rate of fossilization, it's starting to look like HAL is emulating the Cubbies.

I can't believe they sent down Peraza. Sure, I heard he had a sucky spring in the batter's box. But who gives a crap about spring training results? This guy proved himself at the end of last season. Oswaldo Cabrera said Peraza's SS defense is not just good, it's "elite" level. Even if he doesn't hit, his defense likely would be enough to carry him in the lineup. The little we've seen of him, though, says he will hit.

Peraza has to be given one of the three infield spots: 2B, SS or 3B. Sending him down? Stupid, real stupid.

Why the hell is Gleyber Torres still on the team? Why the hell is Donald Duck still here? It's absolutely incredible that Hicks is still here.

Throw Jasson Dominguez in there instead of Hicks, and I think you see improvement approaching near infinite proportions.

Ditto with Peraza for Donald Duck.

Yankee management simply hates to develop young players. That's why they've only developed two position players in almost 20 years: Robinson Cano and Aaron Judge.

That's why they've only developed one durable starting pitcher in the last quarter century (Andy Pettite). It looked like Jordan Montgomery was coming along, before they bamboozled him out of town, so he doesn't count. I'm talking about guys who stayed here and pitched well and stayed healthy. If a guy was hurt all the time but won championships, that would count, but we haven't won any championships in the last two decades, except for 2009. And that was with mostly free agent talent.

They couldn't move Donaldson or The Gleyber, Hammer. And until they can do that, they won't bring up Peraza. I would at least like to see Ozzy play regularly, even if it's at Triple-A.

Carl J. Weitz said...

I predict that he will keep # 77.

Sterling's HR call: " A jolte from Volpe. 'Oh Mama Leone left a note on the door
She said, 'Sonny, hit one out of the country'".

The Hammer of God said...

Hoss, they should've cut Donaldson over the winter. Gleyber should've been traded last year at the deadline or at least over the winter. The refusal to trim dead wood or develop new blood is what really drives me nuts. There really is no other explanation for this, except that they are extremely risk averse and just want to keep everything status quo.

It's like on an African safari, they'd rather fire a muzzle loading, black powder musket over a modern Winchester dangerous game rifle. A lot of game gets away. And sooner or later, an angry elephant or furious lion will charge after that first ineffective shot. And then it's up to the professional hunter (HAL) to save Brian Cashman's ass. I'm getting real tired of this stupid charade.
