Incroyable!

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
      He chortled in his joy.

I never really thought it was possible. The vague maybes of Boone didn't convince me. The shit stats from Double A (Double A!!) didn't convince me. The pretty terrific play of Cabbie didn't convince me.

Who woulda thunk it? Cashman is abandoning his butt buddy Volpe for at least another three weeks? We will be spared the pain of Little Tony batting in the low .200s and choking on key plays?

Volpe is staying in the minors. The Martian is starting to whomp the ball. Rice doesn't have a broken hand. Cody is hot as a pistol.

Maybe there is a God.

What is going on? A decision based on baseball, not the PR department's needs? I was flummoxed too.

So I went searching. Did the Yankees demote their PR staff and replace with an AI program? Nah, it would still be a pile of bile and the trust funder front office would still be bamboozled by their own BS.

Did they hire an actual baseball professional in the front office and actually listen to them? They did hire someone, but as the Int. scouting director, they would have sent them hither and yon and kept him away from the front office.

Then I saw an old news article and it dawned on me: Cashman's contract ends in 2026.

I understand everything now.

Son of a bitch, Dr. T, you may have hit on it. The only one and true motivating factor for ANYONE in this age of PEAK FUCKING GREED AND SELF-CENTEREDNESS is money. Brian suddenly wants to win to make sure he gets to continue being Brian "the Man" Cashman and to preserve his hegemony for another thousand years.

You have figured it out: IT'S BRIAN'S WALK YEAR and nothing can focus a baseball mind like a contract year. I wonder if he's trying to lock down an extension before the lockout? Wow.

This. Thank you, Doc. It changes everything.

Yeah, Bits, you nailed it too. Yup. He's locking up his contract before the lockout. Good pay and no work to do? I'm sure he'll get a fat raise, even if the Yankees crash out, as usual.
