Still, this remains the crappiest Yankee spring in recollection. From Joba's ankle to Pineda's shoulder, from Cashman's stalker videos to the Cheapbrenners' budget, from Mariano's blown save to veteran hitters flustered by simple overshifts... everything has spiraled downward. This isn't three setbacks. It's more like a month of them.
We have a back-up shortstop who can't field. We have a hitters who either cannot or will not adjust their swings. And after all the self-congratulations about our pitching depth -- (It's a wonder we didn't award ourselves Oscars and Pulitzers) - we once again have a LOOGY who can't LOOG and Freddy Garcia as caboose of the rotation.
The Mets are rising, the Rangers look dynastic, Tampa has our number, and you could hear the hope draining from John Sterling's voice as early as the second inning yesterday, when he began suggesting that one run was all Tampa would need. That's the kind of pessimism that comes in the eighth inning of a six-game slump... not in the second inning of the third game of the season.
It's April. It's way too early to feel this depressed about a team.
But make no mistake: The 2012 Yankees have pulled it off.

Duque, relax. We three games coming up against the Orioles. To quote Edgar Allen Poe, "I wanna thank the good Lord for putting the Orioles in the AL East."
