To revive the Yankees, Hal Steinbrenner will have to do something entirely new: He will have to outbid Steve Cohen. (Unless, of course, they can reach an agreement)

As we celebrate The Martian and his meteors - Austin Wells and Everson Pereira - it's impossible not to ponder the looming glories of 2024, a time of cultural harmony and political good will. It should be a great time to be alive, if you love civil wars and the Yankees.

Check out our lineup. Assuming that we stick with Anthony Rizzo at 1B, I count five positions locked in: Judge in RF, Volpe at SS, Gleyber at 2B and Jasson Dominguez in CF. (There is no turning back from The Martian.) That's five of nine - a batting average of .555! And we haven't even pondered the staff.

Already, voices across the Yankiverse are calling for the signing of Cody Bellinger, who at 29 will be coming off perhaps his best season. Bellinger is hitting .320 with 23 HRs -following a three-year sojourn into Gallo Town, when he hit .239, .165 and .210. He also carries a slight whiff of Giancarlo, that is, of a slugger whose career year might just have happened.

But here's the rub: To make Bellinger a Yankee, Hal Steinbrenner will have to outbid not only the West Coast and the Cubs, but also his fellow NY billionaire codpiece, Steve Cohen. Last year, he did just that... albeit in a strange way.

Last year, Cohen chased every big name free agent like a beagle after the garbage truck - except for one: Mr. Aaron Judge. Cohen sat out that auction, in the same way that Hal barely nibbled on Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, who signed with the Mets.

Before going further, let me assure you that I would never EVER suggest collusion among owners: That's unethical! It simply does not happen among principled luminaries, such as Cohen and Steinbrenner. If you even thought that such moves might be made, you should be ashamed. You should be banned from this blog - from all Yankee blogs. I can tell you without a doubt that all bidding was conducted with the utmost integrity and honor. The owners do not collude. If you're reading this aloud, wash your mouth out with soap.

Also, whatever happened last winter, it didn't help either owner, whose teams shat the beds. Therefore, this winter, if and when Bellinger comes into play, Hal will have to outbid Cohen. Right?

Hmm. Wait a minute. There is another factor. Shohei Ohtani. He might be a free agent. Certainly, a non-collusionary spending truce would benefit both owners - if one chased Ohtani and the other got Bellinger? Of course, that cannot happen, because of the ethics involved.

Because here's the real rub: For either the Mets or Yankees to win a pennant in 2024, they'll need both.

So, let's be real here: Hal won't outbid Cohen for Ohtani. He'll wave some money around and talk tough, Joe Rogan-style, but then he'll do what he always does: Finish second in the biding. That would leave Bellinger.

Insert sigh here.

Well, they'll have to find someone to play left field. For all his hope, Pereira has six hits in 46 at bats. And no matter what they do this month, our three "Baby Bombers" have been rushed through the system, perhaps to their detriment. Five weeks ago, they were all in Double A. They ripped through Scranton with barely one visit to the Dollar General. The grim truth is that every MLB team has a September wave of youth, and unless The Martian turns out to be a monster, the Yankee crop looks rather average. One player exceled at Triple A this year, but they want no part of Estevan Florial. A year from now, will they be giving any of these guys the Florial Treatment?

Last time the Yankees won anything - 2009 - Hal courageously signed CC Sabathia, Mark Teixieira and AJ Burnett - baseball's three top free agents. Five years later, he tried to repeat it: Carlos Beltran, Jacoby Ellsbury and Brian McCann. It didn't work. Ever since, he's let the players go and, instead, chased the money.

To revive the Yankees this winter will require a shit-ton of spending, and probably the eating of at least one giant contract. (Looking at you, Giancarlo.) And unlike 2009, this time, Hal has competition from his own back yard.

So, would he give Cohen a call and talk about - oh, I dunno - the price of tomatoes?

Can't wait for the simulated tomato sauce stain on every jersey!

Excellent read - and thank you so very much again for the shout out to tomatoes.

At the end of the day - it’s not just the price of tomatoes but the over all decline of quality and freshness of these delectable orbs of culinarily versatility that could burn many six minutes increments of chit chat on the blower.

“How’s the salsa flowing - It isn’t just my plump Jersey Slicers that I’m slicing. - Chicken Parm ain’t nothing without a Wells worth of tasty sauce, Boss!”

Next year YES even plans to introduce Pasta Power stats during Wednesday home games as they roll out Prince Pasta as a new sponsor.

Expect there to soon be a HAL/Cashie whispering campaign amongst the Knights of the Press Box about how we don't need to bid on Shohei or Bellinger because we have so many great young outfielders coming up—just like we had so many great young infielders coming up a few years ago.

Apologies Hoss for messing up the order there :)

Oh, and as for 2024:

"Disharmony and misunderstanding
Hatred and distrust abounding
Nothing but falsehoods and derision
Rancid nightmares and false visions
Mystic putrid salivation
And from reality our liberation
Aquarius! Aquarius!"

And this quandary is exactly one of the reasons why these kids should've been brought up much earlier in the season. Because then we'd have a much better idea of what we've got. With one month of play in the majors, are we really going to find out how good these guys are? They should've been developing up here from the start of the season.

I took a look at Ohtani's baseball reference page. You know that he's also 29 years old? Same as Bellinger. That ain't good. My first instinct is to say stay away from the mega-contracts with both of these guys.

Other than these guys, I don't what free agents will be available this winter. I would look for guys who would be productive in smaller two, three to four year contracts. Just as an example from a few years past, there was Joc Pederson. He would've been a good pickup, good value. Yanks never made an offer, so far as I know. Charlie Morton, back when he first signed with Houston, would've been a very good pickup. We never made an offer to him, so far as I'm aware. These guys are too old now, but there probably are younger guys who might offer comparable value available as free agents.

And if the Brainless Jackass had made some good trades at the deadline this year, maybe we'd have something more to talk about for next year.

Instead, he's going to allow Severino to walk away (hopefully). He held onto Torres (who knows why). He dumped Bader for nothing. Domingo German has been banished (again).

What a mess!

You know, I hear that allowing Bader to be claimed off waivers saved the Yankees $5.1 million. HAL must've congratulated Brainless for a job well done. A penny saved is a penny earned.

It ain't too late to trade Torres. That should be one of the moves this winter. Move Torres. Get a starting pitcher + an outfield prospect. Or a left fielder (who is a lefty hitter) + a pitching prospect. Peraza will play 2B.

They should trade either Higashioka or Jose Trevino. Rortveldt should be banished to the minors.

Yes, they’re gonna have to make some moves. I’ve been lobbying for a Torres trade for quite some time now. He’s one of our few tradable assets, but please Cacheman don’t fuck it up. Neither one of the P&P boys looks quite ready, Peraza especially. Is he really this bad? At least Pereira has shown sparks. I’m as happy as anybody with JD, but can we please wait more than 3 games before anointing him the starting CF? Wells should slide into a platoon with probably ….Higgs, so Trevino can be moved, Rortvedt too, or otherwise Little Ben can be Florialized. Also note Wells can play 1B if Rizzo’s brains are still scrambled, which of course would change the C situation. The drums will soon be beating for Somerset C Uncle Ben Rice. It seems all he does is hit.

Bold prediction, Judge moves to 1B in 2025, (after Rizzo leaves) so we still need OFers. We have several interesting pitchers in the minor leagues, but we all know how quickly a pitching staff can fall apart. One interesting FA - how about a Jordan Montgomery reunion?

Finally, I think we’re stuck with Stanton, one of our “Stars” as Steinway likes to call them. I’ve already written we outdated have to write off megabucks AND attach a prospect to move him. No, I think he’ll still be power walking around the bases for some time yet.

Finally, the team finishes several games above .500 this year, both boone and cashman return next year. Life is indeed a long lesson in humility.

Amen, Hammer!

Yes, Ohtani is 29, has already been injured repeatedly, and doesn't really play a position outside of Occasional Pitcher. Maybe he could platoon with Cantrun, as the first Billionaire DH?

Charlie Morton is another of the continuous, "small" mistakes Cashman keeps making, every year. He's passed on Morton as free agent three different times now, and the man's gone a combined 88-51, 7-4 in the postseason. He's won a pennant with TB, and rings with Houston and Atlanta—and may well pick up another one this season.

But that makes no never mind to The Brain.

999, I'm afraid that Gleyber's recent resurgence at the plate has now made him untouchable, and soon he'll get the big payout.

I love your other ideas, particularly bringing back Monty. Of course, he will probably just be ordered to the Yanks' "gas station" to ruin his arm again.

(just got the email blast from Yankees central - surprised to see that it took those slacker yutzes so damn long to capitalize on their youts (tip of the cap to Doug)

I can tell you why they won't really try for CodyB.

He's not old enough yet.

Now RizzO is done for the year - needs a new brain or some such thing . . .

I wonder if Rizzo will retire.

Rizzo is the story of the day, and the YES apologists are hanging their hats on losing him as clearly the major reason the Yankees season went down the toilet.

I guess Hal doesn’t need to do a deep dive on the organization anymore.

4 0 0 for Cantrun.

Even came out for curtain call even though there really wasn’t much of a call for one.

Indeed, Kay opined the “the whole lineup was built around Rizzo”

Some things that I will never understand: Gotta start with Charlie Morton. Luis Castillo. Marcus Stroman. Trading a solid, improving pitcher, Monty, for an injured Bader, then letting Bader drift away for NOTHING the following year. Not signing Joc Peterson as a lethal left handed platoon bat against who can catch the ball. And cheaply! Letting Verlander float past them a few years back. Why haven't they signed a starting catcher? You know the type, they swing the bat, and it goes "DING"!. The fear that any pitcher who isn't immediately successful is another Whitson? Off the top of my head I'm thinking of Sonny Gray and Eovaldi who seem understand pitching, except when deemed un-coachable by The Brain. The Brain's love of utility players. The organization's vision of signing athletic up the middle talent with a very wide outcome potential. I have to wonder how many talented bats that they watched go by because of their greedy strategy for five-tool potential HOF fantasies. The night is late, I know that I've missed a lot of names and notions.... But just unloading a few frustrations feels so good.😊

Oh, in the name of Mr. Weiss stay the hell away from Ohtani!

Kay is a mealy mouthed corporate shill.

Congrats to Stanton. Although it wasn't a solo shot, which is emblematic of his HR output.
