According to Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin, "The New York Yankees’ disastrous fifth inning in Game 5 of the World Series was the perfect metaphor for... [a] series of blunders, missed opportunities and mental
short-circuits that marked the last full week of the 2024 [Presidential] campaign." It's where the season landed us: our team is now a widely recognized symbol not of pride, not of power, not of legacy... but of error. If you're in a bar with a friend and they spill a whole beer, you can say "Smooth move, Judge" and they'll get it. "No rush, Rizzo," "Stay put, Cole," and "Nice throw, Volpe" could cover any number of hilarious situations. This is the meaning of "Yankees" now.

Just like the NY Yankees, that Washington Post article is behind a pay wall…
Shoot, they told me it was a gift link. Liars!
Try this. If it doesn't work, I've really Yankeed this. https://wapo.st/3YAZSu6
YAY
Did she mention the time-worn phrase: “Pulling a Boooooner”?
Didn't see that or No Soto No Peace
Just to throw in my response to Carl J. Weitz's excellent comment on my Soto post:
I completely agree with you on most of that, CJW. Yes, I should have pointed out that, considering how owners ALWAYS manipulate the revenue figures, the Yankees almost surely made much more than this.
And yes, sadly, I suspect that Hal will find a way to "come in second" (meaning third, or fourth, or fifth) in the Soto bidding. I just don't think we should let him off the hook preemptively. Among other things, this would be a tactical DISASTER considering the fact that we gave up Michael King for Soto. But in any case, we in the fan base should be constantly threatening rage, boycotts, defecting to the Mets—ANYTHING that might make Hal pause.
As for the rest, well, I don't know if the Yanks WILL go after Bregman and Alonso; probably not. And the both of them together won't make up for losing Soto. Yes, maybe Spencer and The Martian will become stars; they're just as likely to be the next Frazier and Fowler. Plus, who knows how long it will take them to become anything?
Finally, yes, you're right: the fire is missing. And people know that.
It is with deep regret that I inform you that not one single Yankee won a gold glove this past season. But we all know that fielding is not a skill worthy of our attention.
