Cash on Volpe: “I think the injury probably contributed to the performance season that he would end up having more than we would have thought based on our intimate involvement with him and our medical staff and how that played out."

Huh?

Lemme get this straight, in an A.I. way...

So, we're told now that Anthony Volpe will probably miss opening day, rehabbing from shoulder surgery on the tweak that wrecked his and the Yankees' 2025 season.

Excuse me, while I process this...

Apparently, the Yankee Brain Trust will soon gather to plot a course for 2026. The team will consider Jose Caballero and/or Oswaldo Cabrera as SS placeholders, while Cashman prays for the sudden maturity of George Lombard Jr., and combs the scrap yards and recycling bins of The Damned.

Volpe should return in May, raising a question for the storied franchise:

Now, what?

For three hard years, we've wanted Volpe to become a great Yankee. And - honestly - I think something is in there. The guy is a fighter and a solid teammate. But we're heading into winter with four basic Volpe memories:

1. Strike one.
2. Strike two.
3. Strike three.
4. Return to dugout.

The Jersey Giants have Cam Skattebo.

The Yankees have Anthony Scattered Boos.

A couple interesting bits of info from the Cash conference yesterday. Seasoned Cashman-ologists can decipher two veiled but nonetheless clear messages.

1) Volpe's days in pinstripes are numbered. Forget the platitudes about getting him back healthy, helping the team win next year. The real message was in Cash's unprompted and unnecessary commentary about Baker Mayfield. He never named Mayfield but he did, while discussing Volpe, bring up athletes in other sports who were highly heralded early in their career, disappointed, then figured it out somewhere else and became stars. Mayfield, right now, is exhibit 1 of that phenomenon. Translation...Cash is all but convinced it ain't gonna happen for Volpe with the Yankees.

2) Hal doesn't have what it takes to win. While talking about Hal's dedication to succeess, Cash launched into a bizarre riff about how there's no "championship winning gene", then said George Steinbrenner should be in the Hall of Fame. Sure, he backtracked, stumbled, tried to explain that he didn't mean a literal, heritable gene, but rather some kind of symbolic, ineffable "winning gene" that has nothing to do with biology. Sure Cash. Sure. Translation...Hal won't do what's necessary to win.

Cash has used these tricks before. He's trying to salvage Volpe's trade value by implying his problems are just a "cant do it in NY" problem. Regarding Hal, he's once again coyly signaling to the cognoscetti that Hal is a bad owner, and implying that but for Cash the mighty Yankees would fall even further. I confess to being intrigued by this question...Does Hal allow Cashman to slyly bash Hal, and thereby protect Cashman's position? Or is Hal too stupid to realize Cashman is bashing him?

The same astute medical staff that cleared possible trade acquisitions of pitchers, only to have their arms fall off a few weeks later.
On a side note, Clint Frazier hosts a great podcast where he shares insider information on the workings of the Yankees organization and his experiences playing for the team. After Jeter said that he thought there was too much interference by the analytical staff in Boone's decisions, Cashman knocked him for his comments. But Frazier backs up Jeter and relates an interesting dynamic in the clubhouse.

Posting to second the praise of Clint Frazier's podcast. I like him more as a retired player than as an active player.

Class action suit.
All the players and prospects in HAL's tenure that have been ruined by bad medical treatment and mismanagement in development.

Triple damages. 💰💰💰

HAL is penniless.

The players, who know better, run the team.

(Yes, I realize I have more chance at dying in a tragic blimp accident.)

"Anthony Scattered Boos" That's some weapons grade word play right there.
