One And Done.....

The Yankees reverted to form last night.

This team, as many times noted, did not have what it takes to come back and win, once behind.

I don't want to hear from the accountants now, who will point out several games where it happened. But we all know that this team, once behind early, just seemed to go into an offensive shell.

This is in contrast to several of our championship teams where we all knew it wasn't over until it was over.

I called this game " lost and done" in the first inning last night, after the initial home run into the right field stands. And, hatefully, I was right.

We threatened a lot. Bases loaded, one out and Martin and Gardy both doinked. All night long. No big hit. Not ever.

So the powerful AL East comes up empty. Boston puked on themselves. And we just followed form.

It's almost, " if they're ( Boston ) not in it, we don't want to be there either."

Unfortunately, I predicted that this team would collapse. It is no longer imminent.

The team is too old already, and now another year older.

And none of our young people are really flashing, although I think Nova would have given us 6 innings and 2 runs yesterday if Joe had let him pitch. He did that several times this year.

But there was panic on the bench and, I fear, Ivan's confidence took a hit.

Hughes is likely a 6th inning guy from now on. Ian Kennedy will compete for the Cy Young.

Jesus will be traded with Banuelos for another AJ.

Brackman and Bettances, whom no one would take if offered, will be under .500 either at AA or AAA. When we finally dump them, one of them will blossom.

A-Rod will miss 60 games next year, due to barking knees, hips and an inability to hit breaking balls. Seriously, who regards him as a threat anymore? Almost any number 4 hitter on any playoff team is, today, more intimidating.

And Bartolo and Freddy, whom everyone thought were already retired, will be retired. Or should retire, but won't. Nonetheless, the Yankees got far more than they ever expected from these two great ballplayers. But that won't happen again.

Cashman won't have the patience, now, to wait for our youngsters to develop. We'll deal away more Ian Kennedy types for more John Lester types.

So I'm looking at a " lost decade." And we are already a few years into it.

easy there, Alphonso. This suck, but the future is not as bleak as your current despair. All we needed was one hit. Didn't get it. Bad ju-ju? Probably some malignancy in Arod's soul. We still had the best team in the league for the season. More young pitchers coming, Montero hitting every day. Go, Yankes! Kick some Boston ass!
Thanks, though, for making the season more fun and enjoyable. This blog has replaced all the tiresome number-crunchers as my go-to for Yankee analysis.

and by the way, if any of you have any Yankee haters in your life, Hart Seely's collection of Phil Rizzuto prose makes a great gift.

Do you really think Ian Kennedy would put up those numbers in the AL East? Do you really think Alexander the Great won't call Jose Bautista to ask him how he's getting around the Selig's witch-hunt for steroid users? Do you really think Jesus Montero won't produce the Miracle of Reduced Age, making the Captain 25 again? Do you really think the Cash-Man won't buy C.J. Wilson? Do you really think Hal won't buy Jeffrey Mair season's tickets in the porch to ensure he catches Jeter's fly balls?

The Yankees Will Return...
