Sing it

If we had a closer...

Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum
Season long, I'd biddy biddy bum
If we had a closing man!
Boone wouldn't have to work hard
Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum

If we had a closing pitcher-yidle-diddle-didle-didle man!

"No, we wouldn't have to score much
Ya ba dibba-dibba-dibba-dibba-do
All day long we'd take our awful cuts

"Gleyber wouldn't have to think much
No, a dibba-dibba-dibba-do
He could stand at second and dream his life away
If we had a closing man..."

Cashman really screwed the pooch (and us) at the trade deadline. Chisolm has talent, but has averaged 55 games per year on the IL (a total that even impresses Stanton). The two mediocrities he imported for the bullpen have already flamed out. One thing I’ve noticed is that the team doesn’t seem to specifically develop closers in the minors; instead their usage is haphazard. Why not try using suitable arms as closers from A-ball on up? This is something that should’ve been done with Marinaccio, who is still withering away at SWB.

I don’t know about you, but I’m already sharpening my knifes for October.

Cashman is no Tevye, that's for sure. Or Topol, for that matter.

Or Norman Jewison

Or Norman Lear.

The advanced stats say Holmesy is having a very good/borderline great year. Low exit velo, high spin rate, movement on breaking ball, all that fancy new stuff.

10 blown saves say otherwise

Blossoming even as we gaze

Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears.

But mostly tears
the past 15 years.

BTR, who you gonna believe? The advanced stats or your lyin' eyes?

Holmes and Kahnle are both FA’s next year. Like all Yankee fans, I’d like to sign Soto, knowing it may well limit our payroll spending elsewhere. The bullpen needs to be rebuilt. Verdugo, Torres free agents who will have to be replaced. Rizzo can be bought out. The Martian you say? Last night He looked bad both at the plate and in the field. Don’t understand the point in starting him against Skubal.

I’m already thinking ‘25. Just think about a playoff game where we have a one run lead or tied in the 9th and Holmes comes in to pitch. 🙀🙀🙀🙀

Doug, to me you are the very BEST of chopped liver! Perfectly mixed, a little bit of egg in you. To die for!...

More seriously—Gil to the pen is a great suggestion, and a very necessary one, Doug. Is Clarke Schmidt ever coming back?

And Carl Weitz, great analysis. Our closer can't get people out with his out pitch. Perfect. And doesn't pretty much EVERY team have somebody in Triple-A who can at least come in and throw heat, or a specialty pitch, at least for a couple months until they catch up to him?

Where is our Ron Davis, Righetti, Joba, etc.? Nowhere to be found.

Last update for Schmidt shows an early September return. Moving Gil to the pen has been suggested before as a way to keep his innings at an acceptable level. Downside is that his command and control is sometimes off, and that’s fatal in a closer…still, how can we go into October with Holmes as our closer?
